Good Old Lower East Side (GOLES) is a community-based, membership organization that has been dedicated to keeping people in their homes and community since 1977. GOLES works to build the power of low-income residents of the Lower East side through organizing campaigns, community education, coalition-building, individual counseling, and community driven research.
GOLES is seeking an experienced housing counselor to join its direct services office. Depending on expertise and experience, the position will be that of Housing Counselor or Senior Housing Counselor, which will be reflected in the salary and responsibilities. The position’s core responsibilities include:
- Counseling local residents to help them understand their rights as tenants and allow them to stay in their homes. The counselor will assist tenants with housing issues, including:
- Reviewing and renewing leases
- Navigating housing court
- Landlord harassment (e.g. frivolous litigation, denial of services, etc.)
- Applying to affordable housing lotteries
- NYCHA, HDFC, and Section 8 issues
- SCRIE/DRIE applications and renewals
- Organizing and leading workshops and town-hall style events on housing topics such as:
- Tenants’ Rights to Heat and Hot Water
- Applying to housing lotteries through NYC Housing Connect
- SCRIE and DRIE eligibility
- Participating in special events and activities, including on nights and weekends, such as: GOLES’ “Summerfest” and other events, GOLES’s Annual Celebration, staff retreats, etc.
- Completing projects and tasks related to the position, as assigned by direct supervisor.
The Senior Housing Counselor would also be expected to support and assist other counselors with case-related questions; help ensure that the team serves clients according to the latest developments and best practices in the field; and, depending on experience, counsel and assist tenants with the formation of Tenant Associations.
To be considered, applicants should:
- Be bilingual in English and Spanish, or have advanced spoken Spanish proficiency
- Have at least three years of housing counseling experience, preferably in NYC
- Have a strong understanding of NYC rent-regulated and public housing laws and policies
- Possess outstanding customer service and client management skills
- Be able to handle challenging situations in a professional, courteous and friendly manner
- Have a strong work ethic and a focus on resourceful problem solving
- Be committed to social, racial, and economic justice
