Application deadline November 21, 2016

The NWBCCC is a 40-year old intergenerational social justice community organization that unites individuals and institutions to fight for racial justice and community ownership of our institutions, resources, and economy. NWBCCC is a membership-led organization that uses direct action community organizing to address affordable housing, public education, immigrant rights, youth, voting rights, economic development and jobs issues, and to fight for broader policy change in multiple areas.

We seek to hire a dynamic community organizer to develop community leaders to build local models of community-control of our energy system and to work in coalition to advance energy democracy and climate justice policies on the local, state and national level. The Energy Democracy Organizer will continue to develop our Building Power Program to support leaders of faith-based institutions to implement energy efficiency and clean energy improvements on their buildings while developing capacity for local hire/contracting and community control of clean energy assets (like shared solar). The Energy Democracy Organizer will work with members to identify base building, direct action and leadership development opportunities to challenge corporate control of our energy system and advance a just and participatory transition to a resilient, localized and democratically-controlled clean energy economy. We believe that our organizing work should be led by our members, and that developing leadership is a key responsibility of our organizers. The organizer’s main responsibilities will be to:

  • Support the development of the NWBCCC Energy Democracy Committee
  • Base-building through membership recruitment of community and faith-based institutions
  • Leadership development to build capacity of community leaders and members
  • Develop local campaign to challenge corporate control of energy system and ensure affordability and accountability to low-income people of color
  • Build capacity to train, employ, and contract with Bronx-based residents and firms for green jobs
  • Coordinate participation of community leaders in city, state and federal climate justice campaigns
  • Coordinate collaboration with various technical assistance, finance, planning and policy partners
  • Assist in writing reports to current environmental justice funders and assist with grant development
  • Attend weekly staff meetings and training opportunities

Requirements:

  • Minimum one year experience in organizing
  • Demonstrated commitment and passion for social justice and understanding of community organizing approach to social change
  • Fluency in Spanish and English a plus
  • Have strong writing, communication and negotiation skills
  • Strong interest in and ability to work with diverse groups
  • Ability to work nights and weekends as necessary

Compensation: Competitive salary, based on experience. Excellent benefits, including health and life insurance, tax-sheltered retirement plan, and vacation. Excellent training in community organizing and professional development opportunities.
