AFSCME Maryland Seeks Full-Time Organizers

AFSCME Council 3 seeks applicants for full-time organizer positions in Baltimore and the Eastern Shore.

AFSCME MD represents over 30,000 workers who work to ensure our quality of life in communities across Maryland.   We provide care for the sick and disabled; maintain our colleges and universities; assist those who are suffering; maintain our roads and bridges; ensure that goods and people move safely and efficiently through our airports; and keep our correctional facilities and communities secure, in addition to many other vital services.

JOB DESCRIPTION:  Organizers are responsible for a variety of aspects of a campaign including building relationships with workers, developing issues-based organizing plans for assigned areas, and for recruiting and sustaining motivation of organizing committee members and activists.

This job requires long and irregular hours, some weekend work, and possible out-of-state travel for limited periods of time.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Demonstrated commitment to social and economic justice, and public education.
  • Track record of success.
  • Ability to create and execute work plans.
  • Ability to work with individuals different from oneself.
  • Ability and willingness to work long and irregular hours.
  • Possession of an insured vehicle and valid driver’s license.
  • Experience in community, student, labor, or environmental activism is a plus.
  • Union organizing experience preferred but not required.

 SUMMARY OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Organize and mobilize workers.
  • One-on-one conversations, site visits, meetings, and other interactions with members and potential members.
  • Track assessments and other data in a database on a weekly basis.
  • Attend meetings with supervisors to discuss progress and plan activities.
  • Occasionally, be assigned to other parts of the state or country as required.
