Greater Southeastern MA Labor Council (GSMLC) Seeks Community Engagement Organizer

The Community Engagement Organizer works under the guidance and supervision of the Director of Community Outreach and the GSMLC President. The Community Engagement Organizer’s priority assignment is to increase unionization in our region and to develop and enhance community mobilization to support local union struggles.

About the Greater Southeastern MA Labor Council (GSMLC)

The GSMLC is a labor council that covers over 40 towns and cities in Southeastern Mass., the Cape and Islands, including New Bedford, Fall River, and towns from Seekonk to Provincetown. We bring together over 40 unions representing over 40,000 workers in our region. Labor Councils support our members’ efforts and find common campaigns that unions and community organizations work on to improve working conditions and build working class power to increase economic justice.

EXPERIENCE & SKILLS

The community engagement organizer must have a commitment to the labor movement and an understanding of labor’s goals.  Must be able to advance projects and programs that convey these goals by working with a diverse range of union leaders, union members, and community activists in high-pressure situations and under deadlines. The Organizer will conduct activities consistent with the priorities and work plan set by the Director of Community Outreach and approved by the President of the GSMLC.

REQUIRED SKILLS/EXPERIENCE:

  • Bilingual (fluent in English and Spanish)
  • Ability to multi-task and coordinate various activities simultaneously
  • Commitment to economic and racial justice
  • 2+ years’ experience with union organizing drives and/or community mobilization
  • Ability to write reports and make presentations
  • Skills with basic computer programs (Excel), social media, and websites

SUPERVISION & REPORTING
Day to day supervision and staff meetings will be conducted by Camilo Viveiros, Director of Community Outreach. Reporting will include detailed daily time sheets, weekly and monthly reports documenting all activities as well as future calendar of activities. Presentations will be made monthly at GSMLC meetings and work-plans will updated on an ongoing basis and authorized by the President of Greater Southeastern Mass Labor Council, Cindy Rodrigues.
LOCATION: The GSMLC office is located in New Bedford, MA. Mileage only reimbursed when driving outside of the CLC jurisdiction.

PART TIME POSITION

SALARY: Depends on experience and qualifications

START DATE: This position will begin in September, 2016 and it will be subject to funding renewal on July 1, 2017.
