Participatory Budgeting Projects Seeks Fall Interns (NYC)

PBP seeks programs and communications interns for Fall 2016, starting in September and ending in December or January (exact dates are flexible). The positions are ideal for talented individuals eager to explore the potential of participatory democracy, further their research and design skills, and gain professional experience with a growing nonprofit organization.

Deadline: Aug 22 priority deadline, with rolling review.

Interns will receive a stipend of $500/month.

Programs Internship.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare content for PB educational materials, including info sheets, facilitation materials, participant guides, powerpoint presentations
  • Attend and assist with PB meetings, including working with elected officials and staff, community groups and community residents
  • Aid in community outreach and engagement efforts for local PB processes
  • Design and maintain program impact databases
  • Research and catalogue tech tools to improve organizational and PB processes

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Strong interest in social justice and participatory democracy
  • Project coordination experience (in or out of the classroom, including volunteer and extracurricular activities)
  • Graphic design skills strongly preferred (please include link to work samples if applicable)
  • Data management and analysis skills preferred (please list applicable coursework or experience in your cover letter)
  • Strong writing and interpersonal skills; ability write for a non-technical audience
  • Ability to translate materials into languages other than English (especially Spanish) a plus
  • Ability to work independently and be detail-oriented

Communications Internship.

Responsibilities for the communications intern will include:

  • assist with development of press kits, publicity materials and public education materials
  • assist with Constituent Relationship Management
  • assist with content and management of social media, website, and blog, for PBP and for local PB processes
  • track and compile media coverage
  • track and report on social media and website analytics

The ideal candidate will have:

  • strong interest in social justice and participatory democracy
  • strong communication, writing, and organizational skills
  • experience or interest working with nonprofit organizations
  • strong skills working with Powerpoint, Word, Google Apps, and other relevant software and platforms
  • experience with Twitter, Facebook pages, WordPress, YouTube, and Vimeo
  • some HTML and CSS skills
  • ability to work independently
  • a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field, and some graduate coursework
