Position Summary
The LGBT Network has an immediate opening for an Immigrant Community Organizer. This position will report to the Director of Community Services.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
The LGBT Immigrant Community Organizer is responsible for:
- Identify and engage LGBT people of color and immigrants of all ages across Long Island, with targeted efforts to engage youth and empower leaders
- Raise awareness of the issues and rights of LGBT people of color and immigrants through community education, group and family events, and individual empowerment
- Conduct base-building by researching and fostering relationships with key gatekeepers, including community members and institutions
- Build and mobilize a cohesive, active, and supportive community of LGBT people of color and immigrants
- Develop a cadre of leaders within and on behalf of these communities
- Provide educational and supportive direct services to groups and individuals, including community education; social support groups; social and recreational events; and linkage to immigration administrative relief and health insurance enrollment when appropriate
- Serve as a trained Community Navigator to educate individuals and groups on immigration rights, reform, administrative relief, and options for undocumented and unaccompanied youth
- Adopt a linguistically and culturally appropriate approach to work with people of color and Spanish-speaking Latino/a and immigrant families
- Participate in various community events and committees
- Document, track, and monitor participant utilization for grants, funders, and organizational reporting
Qualification Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in human services, social work, community organizing or other related field preferred, or equivalent work experience
- Bilingual/fluent (written and verbal) in English and Spanish required
- Commitment to and knowledge of LGBT and immigrant issues
- Experience in community organizing and/or engagement of hard-to-reach populations
- Certified Community Navigator or willingness to be trained as a Community Navigator
Other Requirements
- Flexible work schedule a must, as this position may require working nights and weekends
- Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work with a wide range of people and flexibility
- Strong organizational skills for handling multiple tasks at once in a fast-paced environment
