Communications Associate

A new non-profit advocacy organization of fast food workers in New York State is seeking an aggressive, nimble and creative Communications Associate to develop and drive a comprehensive and strategic communications campaign to improve the lives of fast food workers. Responsibilities include media relations, social media and worker communications for mobilization, canvassing drives and legislative campaigns.

Candidates should be campaigners and capable and skilled multi-taskers who are able to utilize a range of communications tools to advance campaigns. The Communications Associate will be part of an innovative project to build on the success of the Fight for 15 and organize fast food workers to build power and win workplace and community improvements for fast food workers across the state. This is an opportunity to be part of an innovative new model building on the largest and most successful economic justice movement in recent times.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop, drive and execute campaign communications plans, including media relations, new media and worker communication;
  • Initiate contact with and respond to inquiries from print, radio, and television journalists;
  • Pitch story ideas and provide information to generate media coverage that drives the campaign forward;
  • Build relationships with labor, political and other key reporters and editors across New York State;
  • Write news advisories, news releases, background pieces, fact sheets, message documents and other press materials;
  • Develop and draft mobilization materials to be used by campaign team with workers;
  • Draft member communications, including newsletters, emails, text messages and other materials for the campaign;
  • Conduct member interviews and spokesperson development for member communications materials and for public speaking;
  • Work closely with the social media strategist to integrate social media components into the campaign;
  • Perform other duties as required to support the organization and its mission.

Qualifications:

  • Three to five years of experience in communications in labor, politics or advocacy organizations;
  • Experience in strategic communications planning;
  • Outstanding writer, able to create strong press releases, message documents and member communications materials;
  • Familiarity with new media tools and openness to expanding skills in this area;
  • Experience working with and creating communications for workers on advocacy campaigns;
  • Demonstrated commitment to social and economic justice, especially work with low-wage workers immigrant and/or people of color communities;
  • Ability to work independently, handle multiple priority projects and meet deadlines;
  • Very strong preference for a candidate comfortable speaking and writing in Spanish;
  • Demonstrated resourcefulness and flexibility in approach to project assignments and planning.
