Cypress Hills Local Development Corporation Seeks Tenant Counselor (NYC)

Cypress Hills Local Development Corporation (CHLDC) is a multi-service, nonprofit community development organization and settlement house in Cypress Hills, Brooklyn. We serve 10,000 residents annually, and our programs include career and education programs, community development, community organizing, housing counseling, and youth and family services. With community residents leading the way, the mission of CHLDC is to build a strong, sustainable Cypress Hills/East New York, where youth and adults achieve educational and economic success, secure healthy and affordable housing in a safe and green urban environment, and develop leadership skills to transform their lives and community.

Cypress Hills Local Development Corporation has an opening for one (1) full-timeTenant Counselor in the Community Organizing and Advocacy division.

The Tenant Counselor will counsel and represent low-income tenants to prevent eviction, secure apartment and building repairs, stop harassment, and otherwise resolve tenant-landlord conflicts. This work will also include advocating for individual tenants in Cypress Hills/East New York who are suffering from harassment and displacement particularly due to the recent re-zoning of the neighborhood. This work is part of an organizational strategy to preserve affordable housing and build community leadership. This Tenant Counselor will work closely with tenant organizers, housing attorneys, and other private and public housing agencies.

Principal Duties:

  • Counsel tenants individually to resolve housing problems.
  • Create, coordinate and lead monthly housing rights workshops.
  • Coordinate and provide community presentations and educational housing
    workshops to residents, community organizations, faith-based organizations, and other local stakeholders.
  • Document work and enter notes into database systems.
  • Provide monthly narratives and statistical reports on work accomplished.
  • Supervise college intern.
  • Report to Director of Tenant Organizing and Counseling.

Position Requirements:

  • Bachelor of Arts of Bachelor of Science required.
  • Fluency in Spanish (spoken and written) required.
  • Work experience in the field of housing and/or social services.
  • Able to effectively communicate with individuals from diverse backgrounds, particularly in working with people in crisis, and with local community. organizations in a dynamic and fast-paced environment.
  • Skilled in facilitating meetings and leading workshops.
  • Committed to leadership development, community building, and community organizing as strategies for social change.
  • Organized and attentive to detail, and computer proficient in order to track data and/or records as needed.
  • Able to work occasional evenings.
  • Able to work independently with strong motivation, and to be flexible.

Compensation:

$39,500 with comprehensive benefits.
