Center for NYC Neighborhoods Seeks Data Manager

The Data Manager (DM) is a full‐position. The DM will report to the Deputy Director of Policy and Research, while working closely with the Director of Network Programs, other staff, and external stakeholders to develop data collection systems and data management strategies that will be used by Center leadership to track and monitor program activities. In addition, the DM will collect data and information from various sources to report on local trends in foreclosures, delinquencies, tax liens, and other urban housing issues. The DM will also contribute to the development of research strategies, making use of the Center’s unique data set in collaboration with other researchers and developing new data analyses for internal use as well as external communications. The DM will advise Center staff on best data integrity practices for collecting and managing data to track and measure the impact of the Center’s programs. Finally, the DM will serve as the Center’s point of contact on data integrity projects related to the organization’s Salesforce database, and actively participate in an effort to integrate data from disparate sources across the Center’s programs. The DM’s role may involve project scoping, managing consultants, mapping and migrating data, obtaining staff input, and training Center staff.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Data Analysis and Mapping

● Obtain, clean and manage data sets from many different sources, including city, state and federal agencies, the U.S. Census, and local organizations.

● Produce engaging and accessible data analyses, including data visualizations, spatial analyses, and maps.

● Develop interactive maps, tools, and similar widgets for the Center’s online presence.

● Conduct statistical analyses of economic, financial and demographic data.

● Produce regular updates on foreclosure trends, along with other relevant data.

Data Management

● Work closely with external consultants overhauling the Center’s revamped Salesforce database, and then train Center staff on its use.

● Serve as an organization‐wide advocate for best practices in the development of data systems for program data collection and management, and advise Center staff on the creation and/or refinement of existing datasets.

● As needed, work with external consultants to develop data collection systems through Salesforce for new Center programs.

Skills & Qualifications

● Experience working with large data sets, collecting, analyzing, and organizing data.

● Experience producing data driven reports and explaining data and statistics in non‐technical terms.

● Competence in Geographic Information Systems (e.g. ArcView GIS), and in spatial analysis techniques, geocoding, geodatabase management, etc.

● Intermediate knowledge of STATA, SAS or R, and competence in managing and cleaning large datasets.

● Competence in Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel and PowerPoint.

● Ability to thrive in collaborative, project‐oriented setting with small groups of professionals.

● BA or BS in any of the following majors: Economics, other Social Sciences, Statistics or Mathematics; MA in a related field preferred.

● Two years work experience in technical research.

● Familiarity with (or interest in) the causes and proposed interventions and solutions related to foreclosure and the affordability crisis in New York City.

● Familiarity with New York City public datasets such as PLUTO.

● Working knowledge of SalesForce administration, including settng up workflow rules and actions, working in sandbox environment, importing data through dataloader.io or other upload tool, and report creation and validation. Knowledge of basic SQL important.

● Familiarity with web mapping tools and APIs, such as CartoDB, Leaflet, D3, GoogleMaps, ArcGIS Online

● Proficiency with Javascript, CSS and HTML.
