New York State Association for Affordable Housing Seeks Policy Director

The New York State Association for Affordable Housing (NYSAFAH) is the trade association for New York’s affordable housing industry statewide. Our 375 members include for-profit and nonprofit developers, lenders, investors, attorneys, architects and others active in the financing, construction, and operation of affordable housing. Together, NYSAFAH’s members are responsible for nearly all of the housing built in New York State with federal, state or local subsidies.

Summary:

NYSAFAH seeks a Policy Director to coordinate policy positions on a local, state and federal level and to develop working groups to help establish policy priorities. The Policy Director will review public and academic reports, white papers, articles and other publications relevant to housing. He will work with NYSAFAH’s staff and board to develop policy-related programming as well as to communicate policy and advocacy positions to the public, press and membership at large. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced housing policy advocate that enjoys working in a fast-paced, team-centered environment.

Responsibilities:
• Work with NYSAFAH staff and board to develop policy-related programming
• Represent NYSAFAH at City, State, and Federal housing-related meetings, hearings, and events
• Work with NYSAFAH lobbyists to draft and submit NYSAFAH public testimony
• Testify at public hearings
• Mobilize membership in response to proposed legislation or regulatory changes
• Respond to meeting and information requests from public officials
• Coordinate NYSAFAH policy and advocacy campaigns with NYSAFAH committees and City and State lobbyists
• Coordinate policy and advocacy campaigns with coalition partners
• Organize affordable housing informational briefings
• Track and analyze legislation, regulatory changes, and other relevant public policies
• Coordinate and staff meetings with public officials
• Review and edit press documents developed by PR team, including quotes, op-eds and press releases related to policy items

Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree required; preferred areas of study –  policy, government relations, communications, real estate or urban planning. Masters preferred (similar studies).
• Tenacity and commitment to follow tasks through to completion
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Strong research and analytical skills
• Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook
• Knowledge of affordable housing policy and development programs
