The Workers Lab Seeks Summer Fellow: Research & Communications (Oakland, CA)

The Research & Communications Summer Fellow will support the implementation of The Workers Lab’s research agenda and communications strategy in the following areas:

Social Media & Communications

  • Manage editorial calendar: produce, curate, and schedule content — on issues specific to workers, labor shifts, economic development, and related — for distribution on TWL communications channels including Facebook, Twitter, WordPress, and LinkedIn.
  • Strategic engagement: monitor The Workers Lab presence on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and other social media platforms in order to develop strategies for content creation and curation that improve audience engagement analytics.
  • Marketing, grantmaking, and fundraising: assist TWL staff in drafting investor proposals, executing crowdfunding campaigns, and spreading the word about TWL investment/programming opportunities.

Research & Programming

  • Resource map: a signature special project under development, the Summer Fellow would play a significant role in compiling information on issue-campaigns across the country and synthesizing that information for later input into a data visualization tool.
  • Collaboration with SeeClickFix: support the stakeholder engagement elements of the technical assistance TWL staff will be providing to cities selected to lead the testing of an app for reporting wage theft and health and safety violations in the workplace. Learn more about the app on our blog.
  • Other special projects: TWL has several projects underway that may be of interest to a fellow.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience required. Grad students or recent grads encouraged to apply.
  • Candidates with an interest in any of the following topical areas are encouraged to apply: labor movements, worker rights, community and economic development, public policy, economics, urban planning, social justice, immigration, workforce development, social entrepreneurship, civic technology, and cross-sector collaboration.
  • Excellent project management, communication and multi-tasking skills required.
  • Demonstrated an in-depth knowledge and understanding (or willingness to learn) of social media platforms and their respective participants and how they can be deployed in different scenarios.
  • Knowledge and experience with blogging, writing, policy analysis and/or social media marketing experience is desired.
  • Able to work independently and as part of a remote team.
  • Familiarity with Asana and Hootsuite are a plus.
  •  Willingly performs all other duties and projects as assigned.

Interpersonal Skills and Competencies Required

  • Ability to effectively communicate information and ideas in written and verbal format, and build and maintain relationships.
  • Must be self-motivated.
  • Excellent project and time management skills.
  • TWL is a startup and therefore being able to work at a fast pace is incredibly important.

Requirements

  • Access to personal laptop.
  • Flexible work schedule (30+ hours per week) is required which may include some evenings and early mornings depending on your time zone.
  • Occasional out-of-town travel may be required and travel costs will be covered.
This fellowship will last the duration of the summer months until late Aug/early Sep. The Summer Fellow will work closely with the Special Advisor on Research & Communications. Fellows will receive up to $1700/month stipend depending on experience, education level, and availability.
