The Professional Staff Congress, AFT Local 2334, is a progressive, activist union representing 25,000 faculty and professional staff at the City University of New York. The PSC is seeking to hire an experienced individual who will work closely with the Director of Contract Administration to increase the union’s effectiveness in enforcing the instructional staff contract and expanding the reach of academic labor unionism. This is a professional, unionized position.
Responsibilities:
Reporting to and under the general supervision of the Director of Contract Administration, with latitude for independent decision-making, carries out the following responsibilities for contract enforcement, with a particular focus on faculty:
- Responds and follows up on member inquiries and workplace issues;
- Investigates, prepares and presents grievances at step one and step two; negotiates settlement agreements with management representatives;
- Assists the Director in the development and implementation of mentoring and training programs for chapter grievance representatives and chapter leadership;
- Represents members at investigatory meetings;
- Analyzes membership information in data-bases;
- Assists rank and file grievance representatives and chapter leaders in building worksite participation, and educating and organizing around contractual rights and grievances;
- Develops and implements contract enforcement strategies for complex issues and campus labor-management discussions;
- Researches, analyzes and prepares reports on contract enforcement issues;
- Assists the Director on special projects as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Demonstrated ability to interpret and administer collective bargaining agreements and personnel policies from a union perspective;
- Experience providing training to rank and file representatives;
- Demonstrated commitment to progressive trade unionism;
- Experience as a union grievance representative and/or organizer; experience negotiating grievance settlement agreements is a plus;
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills;
- Excellent database management skills; experience using Access and Excel;
- Excellent organizational skills and ability to pay attention to details;
- Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment;
- Experience working with a diverse constituency;
- Knowledge of public and private sector labor laws preferred.
Education & Experience Requirements:
- Baccalaureate; more advanced degree in labor and industrial relations is a plus;
- At least 5 years of experience in labor relations or human resources; experience in higher education and/or representing professional employees preferred;
- Demonstrated knowledge of database software (Access & Excel) and office software;
- 3 full-time employment references.
Compensation:
Salary: $70,000+, depending on experience
