Make the Road NY Seeks Neighborhood Rezoning Coordinator

Make the Road New York seeks an energetic and committed organizer to help coordinate our neighborhood rezoning work in the North Shore of Staten Island, East New York and Brownsville, Brooklyn. The Coordinator will supervise tenant organizers in both Brooklyn and Staten Island and help the legal staff preserve affordable housing for community members, and to strengthen MRNY’s reach in these areas.

About the Organization: Make the Road New York (www.maketheroadny.org) is a non-profit organization that builds the power of Latino and working class communities to achieve dignity and justice through organizing, policy innovation, transformative education, and survival services.  We have 19,000 members and operate four community centers in Bushwick, Brooklyn; Jackson Heights, Queens; Port Richmond, Staten Island; and Brentwood, Long Island.

Background: The City is currently considering different community rezoning proposals across the five boroughs. In particular, the City Council has just approved the rezoning for East New York and the North Shore of Staten Island will be rezoned this year. Existing tenants and community members will require additional supports to maintain affordable and quality housing.  MRNY is working in collaboration with other legal services providers across the city in this effort, and our Neighborhood Rezoning Coordinator will work with our tenant organizers in Staten Island and East New York to bring legal services to those most in need of representation.  The Coordinator will also work with MRNY members to create a comprehensive plan for the proposed rezoned areas and coordinate a coalition of groups in Staten Island as well.

The Coordinator will be based out of our Port Richmond office in Staten Island but would need to be mobile across Staten Island and Brooklyn, particularly throughout the identified areas for rezoning. Regular trips to Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens for meetings would also be required.

Responsibilities: Make the Road New York seeks an experienced full time organizer and coalition builder to lead our Neighborhood Rezoning work. The position will report to our Director of Organizing and will coordinate our multidisciplinary team of organizers, attorneys, and coalition members in implementing a vision for a comprehensive rezoning plan in the North Shore of Staten Island, especially in immigrant and communities of color. The Coordinator will also represent Make the Road at various city-wide coalition tables and will lead much of our Staten Island media work, as well as assist with fundraising for the initiative. This position will also supervise three full-time outreach specialists, ensure all grant requirements are met and provide quantitative and qualitative data as needed.

Requirements:

– Demonstrated commitment to base-building and community organizing.

– A minimum of 3 years’ experience in community organizing

– Proven skill at supervision or team leadership.

– Ability to help lead and build effective coalition efforts.

– Skilled at messaging and media / press work.

– The ability to start immediately is essential.

– Flexibility and a willingness to travel between MRNY’s offices – Brooklyn, Queens, and Staten Island

– Spanish language ability is preferred but not essential.

– A car to travel to our Staten Island offices would be helpful.

Salary/Benefits: Salary will depend on experience and follow salary scale set by a democratically elected Personnel Committee. MRNY has a generous benefits package.
