APPLY HERE

Department: Common Justice

Type: Full Time

Min. Experience: Entry Level

The Vera Institute of Justice works to build and improve justice systems that ensure fairness, promote safety, and strengthen communities by tackling the most pressing injustices of our day – from the causes and consequences of mass incarceration, racial disparities, and the loss of public trust in law enforcement, to the unmet needs of the vulnerable, the marginalized, and those harmed by crime and violence. In partnership with governments and communities, Vera studies problems that impede human dignity and justice, pilots solutions that are transformative and achievable, engages diverse communities in informed public debate and helps policymakers and practitioners harness the power of evidence to drive effective policy and practice. Vera is a truly unique institution in the justice reform field in that it promotes fairness across a variety of substantive areas – bail reform, adult and youth confinement, access to justice for immigrants, services of victims of violence – and it does so by working closely with national, state, and local leaders as an trusted change agent. Common Justice is a demonstration project of the Vera Institute of Justice.  Common Justice develops and advances solutions to violence that delivers racial equity and meets the needs of those harmed without relying on incarceration.  The project’s work—locally rooted in Brooklyn but national in scope—is rooted in its innovative victim service and alternative-to-incarceration program based on restorative justice principles. Located in Brooklyn, New York, the program works with young people, 16 to 24 years old, who commit violent felonies, and those they harm. Common Justice aims to reduce violence, facilitate the well-being of those harmed, and transform the criminal justice system’s response to serious crime. The program provides participants with a respectful and effective means of accountability, an equitable and dignified avenue to healing, and the tools to break cycles of violence.  Common Justice also operates a national learning collaborative (HealingWorks) for people working with young men of color harmed by crime and leads an increasing range of national efforts at the intersection of mass incarceration, healing, and racial equity.

The project seeks an enthusiastic, organized, responsible person with excellent communication skills to join Common Justice as the Operations and Development Manager. The individual in this role will assist the Director in running the demonstration project.
