Summary:  Maine State Employees Association, SEIU Local 1989 is seeking to hire an experienced union professional to expand a strategic and aggressive organizing effort in Maine.

Description:  MSEA-SEIU Local 1989 represents roughly 15,000 public and private sector workers across Maine. We are committed to fundamentally changing the conditions for workers throughout Maine by organizing a variety of private and public sector workers statewide.

Duties:

  • Conduct new organizing campaigns under supervision and eventually gaining the capacity to run large campaigns independently.
  • Identify and recruit workplace leaders for organizing campaigns using house visits and one-on-one meetings.
  • Lead committee meetings and work with volunteers to mobilize workers for legislative campaigns.
  • Perform corporate research and quickly learning complex laws and regulations.
  • Assists in planning and conducting educational programs.
  • Build relationships with workers in order to build the union.

Requirements;

  • Demonstrated commitment to the principles of organized labor to build power for working people;
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to relate to workers from a wide range of backgrounds;
  • Ability to be self-directed, think on your feet, and solve problems creatively;
  • Must be able to work independently and follow strategic campaign plans;
  • Proficient with computers, internet research tools, and Microsoft applications;
  • Ability to write reports and summaries, and to utilize databases;
  • Must be able to travel for extended periods, and to work long hours, including nights and weekends as needed;
  • Must have a car and a valid driver’s license.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in a related field preferred.
