Facing Gentrification: Reclaiming Communities by Exercising Political Power

March 24, 2015 @ 6:00 pm - 7:15 pm

Holding onto affordability and livability is everyone’s fight, yet too often those impacted are unaware of the decision-making apparatus by which neighborhoods are re-made, or adopt narrow struggles that undermine opportunities for strategic political and social alliances. How can residents build effective alliances and possibilities for meaningful civic engagement?  This forum is organized by Murphy Institute Students. <<See Flyer>>

Panelists will examine ways in which neighborhood residents can develop political influence and strategic alliances that help shape affordable housing and other initiatives so they do not end up
displacing the very people they are meant to serve.

  • Sharon Cromwell, Political Policy Analyst, SEIU Local 32 BJ
  • Monique “Mo” George, NYC Chapter Director of Organizing, Community Voices Heard
  • Andrew Padilla, East Harlem Documentary film maker
  • Fitzroy Christian, CASA: Community Action for Safe Apartments Leader, member of the Real Affordability for All coalition
  • Moderated by JSMI alum Eddie Rosario, AFSCME Local 375/DC37

Light Refreshments served. RSVP at http://reclaiming-community.eventbrite.com
