Making Your Degree Work for You: Careers in Labor & Community Sectors

Join current students and alumni of the Murphy Institute for Labor Studies as we discuss strategies to build your career from practitioners in both the Labor and Community fields, as well as career advisors from the School of Professional Studies. We will hear from Michael Johnson, the Director of Customer Operations at the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA), Patricia Campos – Medina, former National Political Director for Workers United, SEIU and Kelsey Richardson, Career Advisor at the CUNY School of Professional Studies. We will also have plenty of time for Q & A.
After the event, we will go to a nearby bar to network and build deeper relationships.

Michael G. Johnson is an accomplished public servant with more than 17 years of proven and combined experiences in the government, non-profit and private sectors. In 2015, Michael was appointed Director of Customer Operations at the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA), the largest public housing authority in North America. As Director, he is a thought leader and strategist for a 16-member correspondence team focused on addressing escalated housing-related inquiries channeled through Chair’s and General Manager’s offices, as well as the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), elected officials and other key constituents. Michael previously served for two years as Senior Advisor and Chief of Staff to the General Manager at the NYCHA. Michael also serves on the faculty at the Joseph S. Murphy Institute, City University of New York School of Professional Studies, where he teaches courses on public administration, public policy and political science. He is also President of the MIT Club of New York, leading a team of club officers and volunteers who provide professional, social, educational events and community service programs to a population of more than 9,000 alumni in the New York City Metropolitan area. In 2010, he received Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Martin Luther King Jr. Leadership Award for his many years of volunteer service to communities. Michael received his Bachelors of Arts Degree from the University of Virginia, a Master’s Degree in City Planning from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a Master of Arts Degree in Political Science from the Graduate Center, City University of New York.
Patricia Campos-Medina
Patricia Campos-Medina brings a deep knowledge and understanding of the current dynamics of the labor movement as well as real life union and political campaign experience. Patricia has worked as a labor educator and trainer for The Worker Institute Union Leadership Institute (ULI) since May of 2014. She is also the founder and president of Campos Strategies Group, LLC; a labor, political and organizational development consulting firm that focused on strategic development, grassroots organizing, coalition building and media outreach on progressive issues on a national and international level. Prior to joining the ULI, Patricia’s work included serving as National Assistant Political Director for SEIU in Washington, DC; National Political Director for Workers United, SEIU in New York; Political Director for UNITEHERE in New Jersey, National Legislative Director for UNITE and Deputy Director for LCLAA, AFL-CIO in Washington DC. She also has electoral and public sector campaign experience having worked for many national and local campaigns including Obama for America 2008 in NJ and former Governor Jon Corzine’s (NJ) re-election campaign in 2009; and recently as member of the Booker for Senate 2013 and 2014 campaign teams. She has served in the transition teams of former Governor Corzine, Mayor Cory Booker and President Obama. She is considered an expert on labor, trade and immigration policy. Patricia is a graduate of the ILR School (1996) and the Cornell Institute for Public Affairs, CIPA (2007). She is currently pursuing a PhD from Rutgers University, Newark. She resides in New Jersey with her husband Bob and twin sons Diego and Enrique.
Kelsey Richardson
Kelsey Richardson is currently a Career Advisor at the CUNY School of Professional Studies. Ms. Richardson holds a M.A. in Organizational Psychology from Columbia University Teachers College and a B.A. in Communications and Ethnic Studies from the University of California at Berkeley. Her background includes over fifteen years of career development, student affairs and human resources experience in higher education and the arts & entertainment industry. Previously, Ms. Richardson held the positions of Career Development Instructor & Advisor at Grace Institute from 2010-2013 and Assistant Director of Career Development at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts from 2002-2007. Before her career development experience in the field of higher education, she served as a Training & Development Manager in the Human Resources Department at MTV Networks. Through her consulting firm, Kelsey Richardson Consulting, Ms. Richardson has counseled and advised clients regarding career objectives, resume & cover letter writing and interviewing skills by conducting individual appointments and facilitating career development workshops for universities, associations, businesses and community organizations. Her teaching and seminar presentation experience includes career guidance and skill-building workshops on Resume & Cover Letter Writing, Interviewing Strategies, Myers-Briggs for Teambuilding & Career Planning and Time Management Skills. Ms. Richardson is a member of the National Career Development Association (NCDA), the National Association of Colleges & Employers (NACE) and the National Association of African Americans in Human Resources (NAAHR).
