The crises we find ourselves facing, of economic and social injustice, of community and environmental health, and threats of violence and oppression, begs us to look at the opportunities crisis creates.

In honor of the birthday of W.E.B. Du Bois, who amidst other great accomplishments, authored Economic Co-operation Among Negro Americans in 1907, we will explore the stories, struggles and successes of workers who have taken control and bettered their lives, through the cooperative history of African-American communities, and ask how we can apply those lessons to contemporary struggles locally and around the globe.

• Naceo Giles from Thoroughbred Pest Control, a worker owned cooperative in Brooklyn
• Jessica Gordon Nembhard, Associate Professor of Community Justice & Social Economic Development in the Department of Africana Studies at John Jay College, CUNY and author of Collective Courage: A History of African American Cooperative Economic Thought and Practice
• Roger Green, Director, Dubois-Bunche Center on Public Policy, Medgar Evers College and the Coalition to Save Interfaith
