PROGRAM: CONSTRUCTION SKILLS

The Construction Skills Program is a Pre-Apprenticeship training program that prepares interested graduating high school seniors and adult NYC residents for a career in the unionized building and construction trades. The youth and adult programs are run separately however; both programs prepare participants to succeed in the unionized building trades. The training programs provide classroom theory instruction in ‘Trades Related Math” and an “Introduction to the Building Trades”. Both programs conduct practical applications of hands-on training that mimic the environment of a unionized work site. Upon completion of the program, participants achieve direct entrance to the trade of their choice.

JOB DESCRIPTION: Construction Skills is a twofold program.

  • Classroom Instruction includes, but is not limited to: teaching an overview of the construction industry, apprenticeship, role of unions, workplace behavior, contextualized math (measuring, reading a ruler, etc.), health and safety among other topics using the instructor’s own experience combined with the curriculum provided. In addition, instructors create assessment tools to frequently evaluate participants’ skills and needs for improvement. The trade’s instructor must work in partnership with the math instructor to develop and implement strategies to improve participants understanding and knowledge of math used in the trades.
  • Field Instruction includes, but it’s not limited to: creating a safe and productive environment where participants can experience the different roles involved in a unionized construction project, oversee the community project participants are working on, demonstrate the basic work and construction principles as they apply to projects, manage learning through hands-on activities that may include, but are not limited to: Debris removal, handling building materials, framing, hanging sheet rock, skim coating, use of hand tools & personal protective equipment, measuring, etc.

During both sessions, classroom and field instruction, the following administrative duties are required: provide weekly written evaluations regarding participants’ progress in the program, completed (signed) attendance sheets per each session held, and any other administrative duty required.

QUALIFICATIONS: The qualified candidate is a consultant to CWE who will provide teaching and mentoring services to our trainees who possess strong and verifiable knowledge of the building industry in NYC, Must be a trade person in good standing with her/his respective local, experience teaching youth and or adults, excellent interpersonal skills; team player. Must be flexible –field work instruction may rotate and/or end according to program’s need and some local travel maybe required; able to adapt quickly to change; able to relate to a wide range of people; work well under pressure; self-starter and able to work independently; able to solve problems while working in a fast-paced environment.

JOB LOCATION: Classroom Instruction: 83 Maiden Lane, NY-NY

        Field Instruction: Various non-profit organizations around the city and/or union training centers.

EDUCATION LEVEL: High school diploma or GED required

SALARY: $50.96 per hour

HOURS: Adults Program: Mon-Fri 8am-3:30pm / January-February

Youth Program: March-May 2pm-5pm / July-August 7:30am-2:30pm
