PUSH Buffalo Organizing Director

People United for Sustainable Housing (PUSH Buffalo) is a membership-based community organization fighting to make affordable housing a reality on Buffalo’s West Side. Founded in 2005, PUSH Buffalo was established to: create strong neighborhoods with quality affordable housing; decrease the rate of housing abandonment by reclaiming empty houses from neglectful public and private owners and redeveloping them for occupancy by low-income residents; and develop neighborhood leaders capable of gaining community control over the development process and planning for the future of the neighborhood.

The mission of PUSH Buffalo is to mobilize residents to create strong neighborhoods with quality, affordable housing; to expand local hiring opportunities; and to advance economic justice in Buffalo.

PUSH seeks an organizing director. The successful candidate must have a strong commitment to social and economic equity; collaborating with diverse community and worker organizations; and conducting effective organizing, outreach and the promotion of a comprehensive organizing agenda.

Reports to: Director of Programs

Location: Buffalo, NY

The Organizing Director will:

  • Lead efforts for community outreach, recruitment, education and grassroots politicalaction.
  • Identify and develop community leaders: Organize and conduct one-on-one meetings to build relationships with potential leaders identified during recruiting measures. Training and inspiring leaders to do the same.
  • Provide leadership development training to build the capacity of grassroots leaders.
  • Lead campaign efforts, including developing collective goals, leading strategic planning, connecting organizing work with research and public policy.
  • Build strong coalition relationships among diverse groups of organizational stakeholders and neighborhood leaders. Conduct base building with community leaders, through training and inspiring leaders to do recruitment. (canvassing, meetings, tabling, phone banking, etc.)
  • Monitor and evaluate community organizing program, practices, and initiatives to ensure quality and effectiveness
  • Supervise and provide leadership development opportunities for organizing staff.
  • Communications: Prepare messaging and talking points, write press releases, media advisories, public statements, recruit media to events, organizer press conferences, prepare press packets, write editorials and letters to the editors, write web posts and e-mail updates. Train and inspire leaders in media and communications work.
  • Running Campaigns: Facilitate PUSH Buffalo leaders in a campaign planning process through trainings. (Issue cuts, power analysis, develop campaign demands, research, escalations strategies, execution of plan/tactics/strategies,etc..) Through trainings we inspire leaders to facilitate the campaign development process.
  • Leadership Development: Prepare and facilitate meetings, speak on behalf of PUSH Buffalo, set-up and coordinate lobby visits, organize public events like meetings, actions, marches, rallies, etc. Train and inspire leaders as they develop new skills. Through trainings we inspire leaders to facilitate the campaign development process.

Applicants should have the following qualifications:

  • Minimum 5+years of experience in labor, community, political, or faith-based organizing Ability to think strategically and creatively about organizational development, program design and implementation.
  • Experience working with communities of color, immigrant communities, and/or people whose first or only language is other than English is highly desirable.
  • Experience leading multiple components of a campaign from beginning to end
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish with good written and oral communication skills highly desirable
  • Able to manage multiple campaigns on different timelines and with different objectives
  • Experience supervising other staff or leaders in projects or campaigns
  • Experience working on economic justice, energy democracy and social justice issues.
  • Knowledge of national, state-wide, local and coalition based context of issues, campaigns, and work of grassroots movements.

RELATIONSHIPS

  • Internal: Maintain productive working relationship with organizing and other key staff, PUSH membership and leaders.
  • External: Build and maintain powerful relationships with community members, groups, partners, collaborators, and targets as required.

SALARY AND BENEFITS:

This is a full-time, salaried position. Salary is competitive, based on experience, with generous benefits. Benefits include healthcare and 401(k).

Open Buffalo, as part of the exciting Just Transition Buffalo Collaborative, is seeking an experienced advocate for social justice to coordinate organizing efforts to make economic development projects and policies more sustainable and more just.

The Economic and Climate Justice (ECJ) Coordinator Position:
Open Buffalo is seeking candidates with deep commitment to social change and that share our vision of an “open” Buffalo. Our Economic and Climate Justice Coordinator (ECJ) will have a passion for building knowledge and power within disadvantaged communities while advancing energy and climate reforms. The ECJ Coordinator will work to ensure that all parts of Buffalo are able to participate in its economic rebirth.

This is a full-time, salaried position with benefits based in Buffalo, N.Y., reporting to the Executive Director of Open Buffalo.

Specific Responsibilities:
*    Coordinate activities and campaigns of Open Buffalo’s “High Road Economic Development Table:” a coalition working to make sure that economic development projects and policies benefit the community and promote equity and sustainability.
*    Identify, recruit, and retain residents and allies to advocate for institutional and social change as part of the Open Buffalo collaborative.
*    Coordinate base-building efforts, including door-knocking, phone-banking and related field activities to engage the community.
*    Work with the Open Buffalo Leadership Development Committee to identify candidates for leadership development and work with individuals to create increased capacity for personal growth, organizing, advocacy, and more.
*    Create a Climate, Social and Economic Change Leadership Development program.
*    Work with the Chorus Foundation and national partners to implement national best practices regarding principles of a “Just Transition” from an extractive and exploitative economy to a just and sustainable one.
*    Educate Open Buffalo partners and community allies on Just Transition principles.
*    Provide general support for Open Buffalo campaign work, and other environmental/climate justice movement support.
*    Work with the Open Buffalo Director of Communications to engage in effective social media campaigns.

Qualifications:
*    Minimum Experience: A bachelor’s degree plus three years of experience in community based work or a minimum of six or more years of continued professional growth in a demanding non-profit or government setting
*    Demonstrated commitment, through work or volunteer experience, to social, economic and racial justice
*    Cultural competency and proven ability to work in a culturally diverse environment
*    Experience with and understanding of the tenets of community organizing
*    Experience with and understanding of energy policy, environmental justice, and climate change
*    Experience with and understanding of Erie County and New York State economic policies
*    Excellent interpersonal skills (one-on-one and in a group format), written and oral communication skills
*    Comfort speaking in community forums and facilitating relationships among various sectors
*    Self-motivation, resourcefulness, and creativity
*    Ability to work individually and as part of a team in a fast-paced work environment
*    Ability to manage multiple agendas and operate effectively
*    Strong follow-through and attention to detail
*    Capacity to think strategically and analytically about social, economic, cultural, and political issues affecting a community
*    Fluency in multiple languages is a plus
*    Ability to work nights and weekends as needed
*    Proficiency with word processing, spreadsheets, PowerPoint, and Internet communications

The Coalition for Economic Justice Seeks Organizer (Buffalo, NY)

The Coalition for Economic Justice in Buffalo, NY is seeking a full-time organizer.

Background:
The Coalition for Economic Justice’s (CEJ) mission is to unite our member labor, faith, and community organizations and activist with allies and resources to win campaigns that promote economic justice for all through building strong, diverse, sustainable communities. Our current campaigns are the fight for $15, Industrial Development Authority Reform, and High Road Economic Development.

Responsibilities:

  • Campaign support: Under supervision of Executive Director, develop and implement campaign strategy and coordinate coalition campaign work;
  • Internal organizing: Strengthen participation of member groups in coalition campaigns and activities;
  • Mobilization: Maintain and grow mobilization structure and coordinate coalition leaders, staff, and volunteers in mobilizing member groups and activist base for coalition actions and events.
  • Coalition building: Work with Executive Director and coalition leadership to reach out to allies and recruit new organizations and individual activists to Coalition for Economic Justice through one-on-ones, presentations, tabling, and other outreach activities.
  • Communications: Be responsible, along with the Executive Director, for outreach to press outlets as well new media outlets such as Facebook, Twitter, Google Plus, Instagram etc.
  • Fundraising: Work with coalition leadership, staff and volunteers to develop and implement grassroots fundraising activities, including maintenance of fundraising lists, direct mail, and fundraising events.
  • Support and Supervision for Interns: With Executive Director, support and supervise interns.

Qualifications:

  • Organizing experience, including experience developing and implementing campaigns;
  • Strong commitment to and understanding of worker justice and the labor movement;
  • Ability to mobilize grassroots support and build diverse partnerships;
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills;
  • Ability to maintain a database and use basic computer programs, including Microsoft Word and Excel, and willingness to learn other needed computer programs.
  • Proficiency in Spanish a plus.
  • Experience with popular education and/or media work a plus.

Term of employment: We are seeking someone to start as soon as possible. Position will be permanent, pending a 90 day probation period. The candidate needs to have a valid driver’s license and working vehicle.

Hours: Monday through Friday, may include Saturdays and some Sundays, some weekends, and evenings

Direct Supervisor: Executive Director

Compensation: $31,000 – $38,000 a year, depending on experience; fully paid health and dental benefits.
