Position Description & Responsibilities

CPI seeks a dynamic Deputy Director to oversee program operations and development and to coordinate our strategic programmatic initiatives.  As a member of CPI’s senior leadership team, the Deputy Director plays a key role in day-to-day operations and strategic planning for CPI’s future organizational development.  The Deputy Director will report directly to the Executive Director, and will directly supervise senior program and campaign staff.   The ideal candidate has strong leadership and management skills, is highly collaborative and is an excellent strategic thinker, planner and implementer. The Deputy Director must be able to lead multi-disciplinary staff teams and has significant experience working in the policy arena on strategic policy advocacy campaigns.    

The Deputy Director’s primary responsibilities will be:

  • Working with department directors, to create ambitious goals and effective plans to meet them; supporting their professional development; and serving as a thought partner and resource to senior leaders in their realms of responsibility, including on issues related to the management of their teams.
  • Ensure smooth communication and coordination across departments and campaigns.
  • Foster and reinforce a strong culture of rigor, innovation, and positive engagement.
  • Work closely with the Executive Director, board and other members of the senior staff to develop, articulate and implement overall organizational strategy.
  • Manage policy campaigns.
  • Manage annual planning process that integrates goal-setting, progress tracking, metrics, impact and evaluation. 
  • Ensure there are strong performance management systems throughout the organization, and support senior leaders in hiring, coaching, retention of high performers, and addressing performance issues.
  • Along with other organizational leaders, manage external ally and partner relationships, and represent CPI externally with a variety of audiences, including elected officials.  Represent CPI’s campaign and program work broadly in the community, supporting collaborations and connections with government, academic, grassroots advocacy, and policy organizations.
  • Assist the Executive Director and development staff to cultivate and support relationships with CPI’s current and potential funders.
  • Work with Senior Leadership Team on budget and office-wide organizational planning.
  • Additional responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications:   Applicants must demonstrate a commitment to racial and economic justice and the labor movement.  Also needed: willingness to work long hours and weekends when necessary, and ability to work independently.

  • 5-10 years’ public policy experience, working in government, community organization, union, or social/racial justice non-profit
  • At least 4 years staff management experience
  • Ability to effectively lead, manage and support people within a collaborative working environment
  • Ability to build and maintain relationship with partners, donors, policy stakeholders
  • Strong initiative, follow through, and attention to detail
  • Strong meeting and training facilitator
  • Effective strategic planning, program evaluation, project management, and team-building skills

Bicycle sharing is a convenient, flexible, healthy and fun transportation option that enhances urban livability and mobility. Citi Bike is headquartered in Sunset Park, Brooklyn and operates, Citi Bike, the nation’s largest bike share system. Citi Bike operates every aspect of the program, from repairing and rebalancing bikes, to maintaining the stations and docking points, to marketing the program and educating people about bike share. Citi Bike is in the midst of expansion and plans to grow from 6,000 to 12,000 bikes between now and the end of 2017.

NYC Bike Share’s parent company, Motivate Co., also oversees 9 additional bike share programs in Boston, DC, Chicago, Bay Area, Melbourne, Toronto, Chattanooga, Columbus, and (the newest addition) Seattle.

Overview of Position:

Citi Bike is seeking outgoing, high energy, sales-minded people to join our Citi Bike Squad as an Outreach Ambassador. As a Citi Bike Squad member, you will represent the Citi Bike brand and have the opportunity to meet new people, learn more about Citi Bike, sell Citi Bike day passes and memberships, all while sharing the fun and excitement of bike sharing with New Yorkers and visitors.

This is a temporary position, offering approximately 8-40 hours per week depending on your preference, availability and Citi Bike’s needs. Flexible scheduling; Outreach Ambassadors can provide their availability and the schedule will be created based on preference. Weekday and weekend shifts are available. Work beginning April through Fall 2016. In addition to the base pay of $15 per hour, Outreach Ambassadors will have opportunities for commission and bonuses.

Key Aspects of Position:

  • Represent the Citi Bike brand at assigned events and locations which could include Citi Bike stations, community events, Summer Streets, and other special events in New York City
  • Sell Citi Bike passes and memberships to New Yorkers and visitors
  • Collaborate with the Citi Bike marketing team to determine sales goals, and work to achieve those goals
  • Communication of success stories, key learnings, operations updates, and event recaps to marketing team
  • Educate customers about Citi Bike including the bike features, removal and return procedures for bikes, kiosk signup and pricing

Worker’s Justice Center Seeks Worker Center Coordinator (NYC)

Organizational Description

The Worker’s Justice Project (WJP) is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to promote justice and opportunity for low-wage immigrant workers in New York City by pushing for systematic enforcement and expansion of workplace protections, including labor and occupational health and safety standards; advocating for industry-specific efforts to improve working conditions; and educating immigrant communities about their rights in the workplace and how to exercise those rights. WJP’s strategic plan guides our programmatic focus on: 1) building a strong and unify membership (2) winning workplace justice through worker-led campaigns 3) organizing immigrant day laborers.

The Worker Center Coordinator will be mostly based in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn, but will also support other programmatic efforts in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. The Coordinator is responsible for workforce development trainings, program management, and job development through marketing and outreach to prospective employers. The Coordinator is also responsible for hiring and job dispatch and serves as one of the staff organizers that will engage workers in Worker’s Justice Project’s organizing campaigns/ programs, worker leadership development, and played an important role in unifying and growing a strong membership-based.

Job Responsibilities

Workforce Development Trainings, Program Management, & Outreach:

 Plan, implement, and document workforce development trainings and programming, which include: job skill trainings, vocational trainings, workforce preparation, pre- apprenticeship referrals, life skills workshops, financial literacy, occupational health and safety trainings, and English language instruction.
 Monitor workplaces to safe workplace standards and fair wages
 Coordinate day labor job skill trainings (i.e. painting, carpentry, sheetrock) with worker
leaders and community partners.
 Incorporate popular education methodology into trainings and workshops.
 Manage employer relations with businesses and property owners to ensure that day
laborers and domestic workers and their employers use the day laborer center.
 Create and implement job development strategies to enhance day laborer and domestic worker employment opportunities through marketing and employer outreach.

Hiring & Job Dispatch:

 Work in collaboration with staff, director, and worker leadership to create and implement work plan of activities related to the overall objectives of the hiring site.
 Assist employers, domestic workers, and day laborers to negotiate work agreements in an organized and respectful manner
 Ensure adherence of the rules and procedures accorded by the general assembly
 Advocate for the needs and rights of domestic workers and day laborers with employers
 Document incidents, events, problems and conflicts that occur at the site
 Assist in mediating and resolving conflicts between domestic workers, day laborers and employers

Advocacy, Leadership Development & Social Justice Organizing:

 Serve as one of the primary staff organizers engaging day laborers and domestic workers in the organizing campaigns of the Worker’s Justice Project (WJP)
 Facilitate general assemblies with workers 3-4 times per month (mostly weekends) and as needed
 Facilitate dialogue and education for day laborers about their legal rights and responsibilities
 Work in collaboration with staff and member leaders to develop and promote leadership and empowerment of day laborers and domestic workers
 Work in collaboration with staff and member leaders in implementing a new membership structure that will unify and strengthen the membership-base.
 Promote and facilitate civic participation and democratic decision-making processes
 Maintain and nourish positive community public relations with visitors to the center: police, neighbors, volunteers, press, medical and legal representatives and other institutions, such as churches, unions, and businesses

Administrative:

 Prepare weekly and monthly activity and data reports  Data management and record keeping
 Participate in weekly staff meetings
 Answer phones/field calls when at worksite
 Provide interpretation/translation Job Requirements

Job Description

Organizing responsibilities

  • Collaborate with Executive Committee, that acts as the Board of Directors, and the Steering Com- mittee, that has representatives from each member organization, to develop annual strategic plan and campaign priorities, and to develop agendas for the monthly and quarterly meetings.
  • Build consensus on common goals and priorities among the diverse member organizations and other community stakeholders.
  • Develop strategic direct action campaigns for economic and social justice and coordinate cam- paign implementation, mobilization, and evaluation.
  • Support Jobs with Justice committees that are the foundation of the chapter by providing logisti- cal support, facilitating communication and coordination between committees, and developing agendas and campaign materials.
  • Encourage, foster, and develop the skills of rank and file members to play leading roles in strategic campaigns, committees, and building the organization.
  • Maintain and develop a bilingual print, social media, and web based communication infrastructure for the organization; and maintain a wide range of contacts with local and regional media.
  • Serve as the primary spokesperson for the organization and represent the organization to the me- dia, elected officials, the general public, and at a variety of labor and community coalition tables.
  • Administration, fundraising, & nonprofit management responsibilities
  • Collaborate with the Executive Committee to develop the annual budget; and participate in the fundraising committee to raise funds through a combination of member dues, grassroots fundraising, and foundation grants.
  • Write grants and maintain relationships with foundations and major donors.
  • Recruit and supervise new staff, volunteers, and interns.
  • Co-ordinate all reporting. Manage the administration of the organization in collaboration with the officers, book keeper, and consultants including: maintain the financial records and minutes of meetings, meet annual federal and state reporting requirements, and maintain the organizational database.

Key Qualities and Competencies

  • Strong commitment to and understanding of worker justice and the labor movement.
  • 3-5 years experience labor or community organizing including base building, leadership development, campaign research, and communications. This may include volunteer experience and participation in campaigns as a rank and file organizer.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a diverse organization.
  • Knowledge, skill, and experience in developing and leading effective campaign strategy and commitment to developing rank and file leadership.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to provide oversight for finances and record keeping;
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel and experience or the ability to learn social media, Access, Quick books, Salsa labs and other applications;
  • Willingness to work nights and weekends as needed.
  • Own a vehicle that can be used for work; possess a valid driver’s license and car insurance.

Additional qualifications and skills desired

  • Bi-lingual English and Spanish
  • Teaching or training experience

Compensation
