Picture the Homeless Seeks Executive Director (NYC)

PTH is the only grass roots organization in NYC organizing homeless New Yorkers. The Executive Director is responsible for working collaboratively with Board, staff and members, as well as allies and community stakeholders, to lead PTH in a sustainable, effective manner that creates systemic change that address the root causes of homelessness.

Major responsibilities include:

  • Oversee planning, implementation, evaluation and documentation of organizational programs, including organizing campaigns, leadership development, communications and resource development.
  • Ensure the successful operation of existing projects and campaigns
  • Maintaining current analyses of the political landscape with regard to our campaigns and overall goals with Board, members and staff
  • Ensuring the organization is supporting systems for successfully conducting and tracking membership recruitment and development
  • Supervise the senior staff and ensure their development, effectiveness and advancement.
  • Oversight of administrative systems and resource development

Resource Development.

  • Supervise all fundraising personnel and oversee all fundraising activities
  • Develop and maintain relationships with current and potential institutional funders and individual donors
  • Writing grant proposals and researching and pursuing new funding opportunities.
  • Diversify sources of funding, to include individual donor cultivation, special events and earned income
  • Coordinate the development and implementation of multi-pronged fundraising strategies (foundation, major donor, and grassroots) to support organizational mission and growth.
  • Ensure funding remains in line with our mission and goals

Financial Sustainability

  • Manage PTH’s financial operations including developing annual budgets
  • Monitoring expenditures and income
  • Ensure implementation of annual audit.
  • Ensure that resources are adequate to meet the annual budget

Organizational Development

  • Responsible for the day-to-day management and operation of the organization, including all administrative systems
  • Identify strategies for growth that is mission-centric and that works to retain, respect and develop workers
  • Promote the development of organizational culture and practices that honor our mission and other social justice principles
  • Oversee a safe and welcoming office space.

Communications and Coalition Building

  • Have a clear vision of the political landscape to enable PTH to chart its political strategies
  • Ensure that coalition and ally participation is strategic: that advance issues we are addressing and provide leadership opportunities for our membership
  • Represent and promote PTH to external public in order to ensure an accurate and positive public presence for PTH its leaders, and its mission
  • Ensure that PTH members and leaders effectively represent the organization publicly, not staffers, and that new members are continuously prepared to do so
  • Maintain strong relationships with external stakeholders.
  • Represent PTH’s mission and programs in public (as appropriate on local, state, national and international levels) including funders, media, elected officials, networks and coalitions and other relevant organizations.
  • Ensuring PTH has a strong communications plan, including website, blog, newsletters, list serve, etc.

Relationship with the Board of Directors.

  • Manage and maintain communications with the Board of Directors
  • Assist in developing and supporting committees of the Board
  • Prepare materials for Board meetings, working with Chair to plan agendas;
  • Ensure that the Board of Directors has the training, support and information they need to carry out organizational governance responsibilities
  • Ensure development of new leaders to keep the Board of Directors strong.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum of three years experience as an Executive Director or in the senior leadership of a grass roots organization
  • Minimum of three years experience in a supervisory position in the field of community organizing.
  • Demonstrated success building successful organizing campaigns
  • Three years successful experience in fundraising and financial management
  • Demonstrated ability to build positive ally relationships, in a range of sectors is critical, including labor, faith communities, academia, grass roots and advocacy organizations
  • Demonstrated success and background in leadership development with homeless and/or low income folks
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills
  • Understanding of / demonstrated success in New York political context a plus as evidenced by leadership on successful organizing, policy and/or legislative wins.
  • Experience organizing around homelessness, housing issues, and/or as well as police harassment/brutality, racial justice, gender justice a plus.
