GMHC is recruiting for a community organizer to assist the Public Affairs and Policy team in our efforts to mobilize GMHC clients and the larger community impacted by HIV and AIDS. GMHC is an aggressive advocate at the city, state, and federal levels for fair and effective HIV related policies. The community organizer will help the agency mobilize in support of our efforts at all levels of government.
Essential Job Functions
The following duties are mandatory requirements of the job:
- Recruit, train, and empower GMHC clients to organize on our issues;
- Engage GMHC clients to understand what issues are impacting their lives every day to help inform GMHC’s external policy agenda and strategy;
- Educate and organize GMHC clients and others on actions they can take to further our policy agenda;
- Complete timely data entry;
- Work with community partners to ensure meaningful collaborations;
- Manage many tasks simultaneously and meet deadlines;
- Communicate and build relationships with diverse communities and leaders;
- Logistical support for a variety of events including legislative hearings, lobby days, and rallies;
- Must be available and willing to work weekday evenings and weekends and travel to events across New York City and sometimes in Albany and Washing ton D.C.; and
- Collect GMHC client and supporter stories

Education and Certification
Bachelor’s degree preferred but not required.

- A strong and proven commitment to progressive values and civic engagement, especially within traditionally underrepresented communities and youth;
- Excellent communication skills both written and verbal;
- Comfortable speaking to and interacting with the public, developing new relationships, self-motivated and detail-oriented;
- General knowledge of social media platforms;
- Ability to work as part of team and be flexible;
- Knowledge of New York City and New York State government is a plus;
- A solid understanding of challenges facing those living with and affected by HIV and AIDS along with current HIV prevention methods is essential;
- Experience working with coalitions/community groups; and
- Organizing experience within communities of color
