Description: Make the Road New York seeks a full timeSSC COLLEGE ADVOCATE who will work with Bushwick High School Campus staff and administrators to support students on their pathway to college. They will also provide direct services to students for all aspects of their college process.
Who We Are: The mission of the youth-led Student Success Center (SSC) in Bushwick Campus High School is to support students, faculty, and staff in sustaining and growing a culture of high expectations for post-secondary student achievement for every student and to make accessible critical tools and resources to meet those expectations.
The SSC is part of the MRNY Bushwick Campus Community School Initiative. A community school is a hub of resources, programs, and services that contribute to meeting the needs and building on the strengths of the whole student.
Main responsibilities:
- Work with the SSC Project Manager and 8 Youth Leaders to support students from four schools at Bushwick Campus in their college process. This will include one on one and group support with the college and financial aid application process, support with college essay and resume writing, facilitation of college access/readiness workshops, coordination of college trips/fairs, and organizing campus-wide college awareness events.
- Support a small group of Bushwick Campus alumni through their first year of college to ensure a high retention rate for this cohort.
- Coordinate and outreach for workshop and events for parents/guardians to foster a high level of parent engagement in the college process.
- Participate in school based and partner meetings, research, events and activities as needed.
- Collect and provide quantitative and qualitative data as needed.
- Attend all required department and staff meetings.
Main qualifications:
- Ability to engage and move students to apply to college.
- Experience with the college application process, including CUNY, SUNY, Common App, and writing or editing personal statements and FASFA
- Experience facilitating workshops.
- Strong ability to work with a team as well as independently
- Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, writing and communication skills
- Demonstrated ability to build and maintain relationships with a variety of stakeholders
- Commitment to social justice and youth development
- Must have a Bachelor’s Degree and 2 years’ experience
- Ability to communicate in both English and Spanish
