Society of Professional Engineers and Associates Seeks Labour Relations and/or Union Organizing

The Society of Professional Engineers and Associates (SPEA) is seeking a Labour Relations and/or Union Organizing professional to work as a SPEA Staff Representative. The position is available immediately.

SPEA is an independent trade union representing employees in 5 bargaining units in workplaces across Ontario in the nuclear sector. Our office is located in Mississauga. Our members include: Engineers and other professionals, technicians, technologists, trades
and administrative employees.

The successful candidate will join a team of two Staff Representatives who work closely in collaboration with the SPEA Executive Board. Staff Representatives are responsible for
advising and guiding Executive representatives and members on all labour relations matters, internal/external organizing, handling grievances, collective bargaining, and developing and carrying out work programs/initiatives to advance the interests of the SPEA
and its members, and for building a stronger union through membership engagement.

Salary is highly competitive and commensurate with experience.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Providing effective support to SPEA Executive Board and members
• Initiating and organizing support for SPEA campaigns, both internal and external
• Attending to the overall and day to day needs of the SPEA office
• Preparing, investigating and presenting grievances
• Writing membership communications
The SPEA office is closed on Fridays. SPEA is open to discussing an appropriate/flexible work week.

QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS:
Bachelor degree, or equivalent level of skill in reading, composition, research and problem solving gained in non-academic environments.
Preferably, experience in areas of collective bargaining, grievance handling, organizing, union administration and other labour relations matters.
Familiarity with labour legislation;
Ability to write clearly to produce a variety of documents, including correspondence, membership messages and proposals;
Strong computer skills including excel, word, outlook;
Strong interpersonal skills, including ability to listen sensitively, persuade and motivate, explain, reassure, demonstrate leadership, and respond to challenges;
Ability to organize and prioritize conflicting tasks and assignments independently and respect established timelines;
Ability to maintain confidentiality in dealing with sensitive member, company and union information.
