Description
Contract Campaign Organizer – Temporary Independent Contractor Position
Expected Time Period: July 15th – November 15th
Location: Upper East Side, New York City
About Us
Come join THE independent nurses’ union in New York City and help us fight for a fair contract that ensures quality patient care and the best working environment for our members! Located on the Upper East Side, New York Professional Nurses Union (NYPNU) represents 1,300 Registered Nurses, Nurse Practitioners, and RN Case Managers in Manhattan-area hospitals. NYPNU was founded by nurses with the vision that nurses are best at advocating on their own behalf and are most effective at standing up for their patients. NYPNU’s elected leaders are all current or retired nurses, nurse practitioners, and case managers at the facilities NYPNU represents. When they negotiate the contract, they have to live with the results as employees working side-by-side with other NYPNU members. NYPNU has been, and continues to be, at the forefront of worker and patient advocacy. Most notably, NYPNU was one of the first unions in the country to win nurse-patient ratios in their contract. We continue the fight today for stronger workplace protections to help our patients and our members through our upcoming contract negotiations this Fall.
About the Temporary Contract Campaign Organizer Position
The CCO reports directly to the Executive Director and is also under the direction of the Senior Labor Relations Representative. The CCO is a skilled internal organizer that helps facilitate the development of members as Union leaders. The CCO is dedicated to the “deep organizing” model and believes that when workers are the center of all actions and are the decision makers, the Union wins. The CCO will identify and train member-leaders, work with leaders individually and through our member committees to organize workplace meetings and actions, facilitate member outreach to the larger community surrounding our facilities, and support member-led job actions and other activities. Additionally, the CCO will maintain thorough records of interactions including organizing reports and will develop a comprehensive Contract Campaign Plan & Calendar.
Our members predominantly work in a 24/7 hospital setting, so the CCO will need to work and be available for a range of hours around the clock. While the CCO is considered an independent contractor, the CCO is expected to schedule meetings, workplace actions, and organizing work based upon the campaign’s needs in coordination with the Contract Campaign Committee and the Bargaining Committee. The CCO is expected to spend at least 25 hours per week engaging in direct organizing of members (one-on-one & group conversations) and member-leadership development with additional time as needed for record keeping, strategizing, and drafting of organizing materials.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Recruit and train member-leaders to mobilize their colleagues in support of the contract negotiations campaign
- Prepare member-leaders to develop and execute workplace and community actions
- Facilitate the development of member led committees and community alliances
- Maintain accurate data including member assessments, meeting reports, strategic plans, and member-leadership development plans
- Create leaflets, print and email newsletters/alerts, social media content, and other materials as needed
- Develop, in consultation with member-leaders, a strike plan and implementation steps
The Ideal Candidate
We seek a seasoned organizer who has demonstrated ability using strategic actions, membership engagement, and community outreach/organizing to execute an effective, pressure-building Contract Campaign. The ideal candidate is more at home engaging membership at the worksite than sitting at a desk. They win campaigns by engaging the membership on issues, developing rank-and-file leadership, educating members on internal organizing tactics, and catalyze members to fight against attacks on nurses and healthcare. They are able to quickly develop engaging, dynamic campaigns with detailed implementation designs. They are able to nimbly adjust plans to account for situational developments in the facility and at contract negotiations. The CCO is able to utilize a combination of face-to-face contact, phone calls, and advance technologies to reach, recruit, and engage our diverse group of members. Our membership is incredibly diverse in age, race, gender, sexual orientation, and ethnic origin. Our CCO must be at ease speaking with and developing member-leaders from diverse backgrounds.
