BACKGROUND
The Center for Economic Democracy (CED) is a US social movement building organization, growing capacity in our communities to transition capitalism into a just, sustainable and democratic economy. Based in Boston, CED supports local racial and economic justice initiatives like the Boston Ujima Project, Coalition for Worker Ownership and Power, the Solidarity Economy Initiative and Yes for a Better Budget, while offering training and technical assistance for economic democracy efforts across the US. We’re searching for an experienced nonprofit manager to join our senior leadership team as the Chief of Staff.
POSITION SUMMARY
The Chief of Staff will be responsible for leading CED’s internal processes to facilitate healthy workplace culture and effective collaboration across our organization. As a senior staff member, the Chief of Staff will manage inter-departmental coordination and lead strategies to address CED’s evolving needs as a growing and dynamic nonprofit. The Chief of Staff will maintain a holistic view of CED (programs, administration & finance, human resources, operations and fundraising) and will be empowered to design and implement systems to strengthen our capacities for mutual accountability, shared problem solving, and collective governance.
The ideal candidate is energized by the art of collaborative leadership and takes pride in cultivating thriving, high functioning teams. The Chief of Staff will report to the Executive Director and act as their proxy in certain internal and external venues. The Chief of Staff will coordinate CED’s Senior Management Circle, and serve on CED’s Operations Circle, Fundraising Circle and Program Circle. Within the Operations Circle, the Chief of Staff will work with and support the Manager of Staff Operations to fulfill the circle’s responsibilities.
RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Staff & Leadership Management(40%)
○ Lead Senior Management and Director’s Circle: Lead agenda development, facilitation and coordination across CED’s leadership bodies.
○ Support Executive Director: Work closely with the Executive Director in managing requests and emergent needs, and act as a representative and liaison on their behalf.
○ Coordinate Weekly Staff Meeting: Oversee agendas, coordinate with facilitators and ensure effective use of staff meetings.
○ Support Board Activities: Manage staff activities to ensure that CED’s board is fully supported to fulfill its responsibilities.
○ Manage Staff Supervision Processes: Manage CED’s staff supervision, evaluation, mutual accountability and conflict resolution processes.
○ Staffing Plan: Coordinate CED’s bottom up staffing and personnel planning, and oversee the implementation of the plan including role / title adjustments, salaries, hiring / transitions of staff.
2. Internal Operations (30%)
○ Lead Strategic Planning: Co-lead CED’s organization wide strategic planning and implementation cycles.
○ Manage Policies & Processes: Work with Finance and Operations Team members to develop, improve and revise internal operating policies, including CED’s personnel, accounting and operating manuals, accountability processes, and structures for collective
decision making.
○ Staff Operations Circle: Participate in Operations Circle (OC) and support the Operations Manager to fulfill these areas of responsibilities:
i. Personnel & Onboarding: Onboarding and support for staff and interns to be integrated in CED’s culture, processes and systems.
ii. Staff Culture: Community-building, communication & collaboration protocols, celebrations & recognitions.
iii. Data & Technology: Data management and technology platforms for coordination and organizational efficiency.
iv. Compliance & Reporting: Annual reporting for city and state political activity (lobbying).
v. Office Management: Lease and space negotiations, managing internal resource usage.
3. Special Projects & Partnerships (30%)
○ Special Projects: Support a portfolio of special projects and partnerships in response to emergent needs and opportunities for the organization. Past special projects include:
i. Building Purchase: potential real estate acquisition for office and event space for CED and movement partners.
ii. Movement Sustainability Commons: fiscal sponsorship and back office service provider for mission aligned grassroots projects.
iii. Philanthropic & Investment Funds: assess opportunities for hosting capital funds for grants and investments.
○ Partnership Management: Develop and/or maintain relationships with key organizational stakeholders.
○ Represent CED: Represent CED at specific meetings, conferences and public forums to advance organizational objectives.
QUALIFICATIONS
● Nonprofit manager with social movement experience, skilled in budgeting, strategic planning, staff supervision and fundraising (preferred 6+ years experience in leadership roles).
● Experienced designer and manager of organizational structures, especially those that are cooperative or collective in nature.
● Exceptional interpersonal communicator with high emotional intelligence.
● Highly organized, thorough and diligent project manager.
● Talented facilitator, experienced in leading collaborative planning and decision making processes.
● Experienced coach and conflict mediator.
● Politically engaged activist, familiar with critiques of racial capitalism and approaches to building solidarity economies.
● Experience in the grassroots community organizing sector rooted in working class communities of color.
● Relationships and familiarity with the organizing community in Massachusetts.
● Experience with organizing and facilitating events and conferences.
● Strong writer, public speaker and clear communicator.
● High proficiency with common technology platforms (Google Suite, Zoom, Microsoft etc.).

POSITION DETAILS
1. Overview: This is a full-time (40 hours / week) exempt salaried position.
2. Salary: $75,000 – $90,000.
3. Generous benefits package, including health, dental/vision coverage, 3% retirement match, student loan assistance program, and health savings account.
4. CED observes all national holidays and maintains a Responsible Paid Time Off policy.
5. This position requires Massachusetts residency (unless otherwise negotiated) and the ability to commute to CED’s Boston office on a regular basis.
6. Current Covid-19 protocol allows fully remote work arrangements for employees with an option to use CED’s Boston office space.
