Purpose of Position

The Roosevelt Network External Relations Manager will lead and manage the team’s program communications, stakeholder management, and partnership development. This role will work with the National Director and Senior Program Manager to develop and communicate program language for new and existing initiatives, leverage the network’s Salesforce data to inform a robust communication and engagement strategy — including helping define the appropriate scale for a complex network of students and alumni, manage the student leader who provides communication guidance to peers across network chapters, and work with the network’s two advisory boards alongside the National Director.

This role requires someone flexible and highly adaptable to the ongoing changes in higher education and student life, the political landscape, and joining an organization that is in the first stages of implementing a new strategic plan.

Passion and excitement about the power of young people to be change-makers, experience supervising interns or volunteers, communication, and project management experience required; experience with youth-focused programming is preferred.

This is a non-management, unionized, role.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

Serve as the Network team’s communications lead:

  • In partnership with the Roosevelt Institute Communications team, and in collaboration with the Network’s program/project managers, lead on digital comms strategy including program language, email-blasts, website language, etc.
  • Support event planning, including registration processes, promotion strategies, etc.
  • Oversee the work of a student communications coordinator who is responsible for advising chapters on digital communication and traditional campus media engagements
  • Maintain a communications calendar in Asana
  • Oversee the build-out of a new jobs board system for Network members

In service of the Roosevelt Institute’s new strategic plan, drive forward an emotionally-intelligent and thoughtful strategy for stakeholder management:

  • Serve as the point person for alumni inquiries and general programming coordination
  • In partnership with the National Director, support and coordinate the Alumni Board of Advisors; this includes collaboration with the Roosevelt Institute Development team for alumni fundraising initiatives
  • In partnership with the National Director, support and coordinate with the Student Board of Advisors
  • Serve as the Network team’s Salesforce lead, leveraging the system’s data to inform relationship management strategies and engagement
  • Facilitate member engagement across Linkedin groups, Facebook groups, and Slack channels

Serve as the team’s frontline coordinator for partnership development:

  • Build, manage, and track partnerships with other youth-focused progressive organizations, local groups, and institutions of higher education

Education/Experience:
 

Required:

  • four-year degree
  • 3+ years of nonprofit or higher education communication or external relations experience.
  • Strong writing and editing skills, with a particular focus on digital communication.

Demonstrated experience with:

  • Effective project management.
  • ​​Establishing and managing systems and processes for collaboration and project approvals across teams.
  • Stakeholder management and/or partnership development.
  • A CRM, such as Salesforce.
  • Demonstrated emotional intelligence and the ability to build strong relationships with individuals from a diverse set of identities, backgrounds, professions, and ages.
  • Intermediate to advanced digital and web skills — comfort using systems like Trello, Slack, Google, Zoom.
  • Self-starter, highly motivated, with the ability to adapt and work in a fast paced and changing environment.
  • Passion for developing young progressive leaders.
  • Willingness to travel for site visits (if/when it is safe to do so) and to staff occasional weekend and night-time student conferences, events, etc

Preferred:

  • Mastery of Salesforce, Mailchimp, and Asana systems.
  • Knowledge or past involvement with progressive, youth-focused, coalition ecosystem.
  • Personal experience with student organizing, participation in college registered student organizations, and/or participation in progressive student movement spaces.
