The Research Foundation for The State University of New York (RF) is the largest comprehensive university-connected research foundation in the country. It exists to serve the State University of New York (SUNY) by providing essential administrative services that enable SUNY faculty to focus their efforts on the education of students and the performance of life-changing research across a wide range of disciplines including medicine, engineering, physical sciences, energy, computer science, and social sciences. The Research Foundation supports the advancement of education, research, and discovery at the State University of New York (SUNY) Established in 1951, the RF carries out its responsibilities pursuant to a formal contract with SUNY that has been in force since 1977.

Separate from SUNY, the RF is able to form partnerships that enhance SUNY’s education, research, and public service mission, and spur economic development across New York State. The primary service offered by the RF is sponsored programs administration. The infrastructure in place for sponsored programs allows for RF to also administer agency funds and assist campuses with establishing affiliated corporations.

Job Description:

The Research Foundation at Farmingdale State College (FSC) seeks a full-time counselor for the Science and Technology Entry Program (STEP) to work with historically underrepresented students in 7th-12th grades within local partner school districts to help increase their knowledge of and preparation for college entrance in STEM fields.  The counselor will help the Assistant Director/Director to meet student needs and grant mandates including the assisting with planning and implementation of academic, college and career, and personal development programs.  More specifically, the counselor will:

  • Oversee tutoring program and academic support initiatives
  • Assist with recruitment of applicants and determine eligibility for STEP program
  • Meet individually and in small groups with students to prepare them for college and career entrance
  • Work with partner school coordinators to observe and evaluate afterschool STEP programs at local school districts
  • Provide academic advisement to students as needed and assist with implementation of intervention plans for struggling students
  • Assist with planning and chaperone field trips including, but not limited to visits to area STEM industry, Science Fairs, college visits, etc.

Other responsibilities may be assigned by the program director or assistant director, as appropriate.

Requirements:

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in psychology, social work, or a related STEM field
  • Relevant experience working with historically disadvantaged students within an access program, or another program with a similar mission
  • Experience with program planning, graduation requirements and preparing students for college entrance
  • Strong organizational skills and excellent verbal/written communication abilities
  • Ability to work some Saturdays; occasional evenings and overnight travel for program events

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Proficiency in computer systems, including Microsoft Office
  • Creative, organized, and motivated individual interested in student development
  • Adaptable and able to work with various constituents, including secondary school personnel, college faculty, community stakeholders etc.

Additional Information:

This is a full-time Research Foundation position.

  • Salary range $37,500 – $40,000, offer dependent upon relevant experience and qualifications
