Tri-State Transportation Campaign seeks to hire a part-time office assistant and policy analyst. The position has the potential to become full-time. The ideal candidate has a vested interest in transit and safe streets policies, but can also help with the administrative side of working in an office.
This is a great opportunity for someone to break into the transit policy advocacy world, and we are looking for candidates with strong writing ability and office experience. Strong candidates will also have skills in coding, GIS, statistical analysis, or other planning tools. The right candidate would have the opportunity to contribute to our white papers and reports, memos, and newsletters.
About Tri-State Transportation Campaign
The Tri-State Transportation Campaign is a 501(c)(3) non-profit policy advocacy organization dedicated to mobility, accessibility and livability in New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut. TSTC uses data and policy analysis, along with strategic media outreach, to influence decision-making throughout the metropolitan region. Since it was founded in 1993, TSTC has become a leading voice in the region for transportation and land use policy reform.
About the Position
TSTC is dedicated to improving public transit and active transportation—walking, cycling, and other modes—throughout the tri-state region, and especially in communities with high percentages of transit users, low-income neighborhoods, and communities of color. We believe improved public transit access and safer street design can improve communities through positive impacts on economic development, public health, environmental health, and social equity.
The administrative assistant and policy analyst plays a key role ensuring TSTC’s office functions smoothly and assists the Executive Director with critical financial and administrative tasks. Candidates with analytical backgrounds will also be able to conduct research related to TSTC’s campaigns, co-author white papers and reports, and engage with partner organizations, elected officials, and other stakeholders.
Key administrative tasks include:
- Handling basic financial tasks, including generating payments for vendors;
- Taking on long-term administrative tasks, including annual audits and relocation planning;
- Assisting the Executive Director with day-to-day tasks and basic research;
- Coordinating meetings and managing calendars;
- Updating contact lists;
- Disseminating newsletters and other e-blasts;
- Help with organizing and hosting occasional events;
- Answering phones, tracking general emails, and managing inquiries from press, stakeholders, and other callers;
- Ensuring the office is stocked with supplies and the equipment is working properly.
Research and analysis tasks may include:
- Analyzing existing local, state, federal and other data sets pertaining, but not limited, to: transportation spending, transit ridership, economic impacts of transportation spending and usage patterns, traffic fatalities and injuries, and bicycling and walking;
- Analyzing state, local, and federal budgets and legislation;
- Assisting in drafting original reports, white papers, and fact sheets across multiple campaigns for dissemination to elected and agency officials and the media;
- Providing analytical and statistical support for other staff program work.
Desired Qualifications
Candidates with administrative experience and strong writing skills are encouraged to apply. Ideal candidates for policy analysis work will also have working knowledge of statistical software such as Stata or R; GIS (QGIS) software, online mapping programs or equivalent; and/or CAD-based programs. Experience using Adobe CS (Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop) is also ideal.
