Center for Popular Democracy Seeks Policy and Campaign Organizer

The Center for Popular Democracy promotes equity, opportunity, and a dynamic democracy in partnership with innovative base-building organizations, organizing networks and alliances, and progressive unions across the country. We currently work with 50 partner organizations in 38 states and Puerto Rico and build the strength and capacity of democratic organizations to envision and advance a pro-worker, pro-immigrant, racial and economic justice agenda. CPD is a rapidly-expanding, dynamic organization that partners with organizations across the country to build political power and win tangible victories that improve the lives of low-wage workers, immigrants, and communities of color.

About the Position

CPD/CPDA is seeking a Policy & Campaign Organizer who will work closely with local community organizations and movement partners to develop and win transformative campaigns that strengthen our democracy, with a focus on the broader justice system and in advancing a new narrative that redefines and reimagines public safety in our communities. This person will work closely with the CPD’s Justice Transformation/Racial Justice team, as well as CPD’s communications and campaign staff, to develop and coordinate national support for state-based community organizations leading these fights on the ground. This is an excellent opportunity for someone with multiple skills sets, including in policy, organizing, and campaigns who wants to help strengthen the racial justice movement and support grassroots organizations at the forefront of the fight.

The Center for Popular Democracy/CPD Action (CPD/CPDA) is seeking a Policy & Campaign Organizer to:

  • Develop, in close collaboration with our partners and movement allies, cutting-edge federal, state and local policies that advance our shared racial justice agenda
  • Work with CPD’s network of partners to imagine, craft, and support efforts at mass decarceration and decriminalization, including at the federal and national level
  • Support CPD’s local partner organizations and our Local Progress network in policy, research, and advocacy
  • Maintain regular communication with cohort of CPD affiliates, including regular calls, emails, and newsletter
  • Develop training materials, toolkits, and popular education presentations and modules;
  • Represent CPD in national coalitions, and develop and maintain relationships with allied organizations
  • Analyze legislative and administrative proposals
  • Write content for communications on Justice Transformation work
  • Meet with legislators and staff to advocate for the campaign
  • Contribute to our racial justice program and in issue work in other areas including immigrant rights, economic justice, housing, public education, environmental justice, Wall Street accountability, etc.;

Job Requirements

  • A demonstrated commitment to social, racial and economic justice
  • A deep understanding of the challenges facing communities of color, immigrants, and low and moderate income families;
  • Experience working with grassroots organizations and in diverse communities;
  • At least 3 years experience in advocacy or policy/campaign work
  • Familiarity and expertise in public policy, legislative processes, and/or legal systems
  • Strong background and experience in written communication, such as reports, policy positions, memoranda, white papers, and briefs;
  • Experience working across departments or teams within an organization;
  • Success as an independent, self-motivated leader with an ability to drive projects to completion in a fast-paced environment;
  • Excellent, writing, communication, and organizational skills;
  • Results-focused and organized;
  • Preferred location is Washington, D.C. or New York City. Other locations for exceptional candidates would be considered.
  • Willingness to travel regularly
  • Preferred, but not necessary: bilingual (Spanish/English)

Salary and Benefits

In accordance with CPD/A’s collective bargaining agreement, the salary range for this position is competitive and commensurate with experience. We have a generous benefits package, including health insurance, dental insurance, vision insurance, 15 vacation days per year, 10 sick days per year, 12 paid holidays per year, and contribution to individuals’ 401K plan.
