The Bend the Arc family of organizations consists of Bend the Arc: Jewish Action, our 501(c)(4) organizing and advocacy arm; Bend the Arc: Jewish Action PAC, a political action committee dedicated to supporting candidates for federal office who champion our values; and Bend the Arc: A Jewish Partnership for Justice, our 501(c)(3) education and leadership arm. Headquartered in New York City, we have offices in Washington, D.C., Los Angeles, and San Francisco, with volunteer-led local groups organizing nationwide.
Position:
Reporting to the Senior National Organizer, the National Organizer will be an integral member of Bend the Arc’s field team, and is responsible for helping build the breadth and depth of our base in the Moral Minyan Program. Through campaign work, training and absorption, and online-to-offline methods, the Organizer will identify and engage volunteer leaders and coach, mentor, and train these leaders to organize.
The National Organizer will excel at building relationships with volunteer leaders and organizational partners within and outside of the Jewish community; be driven by a desire to build political power; be highly motivated and goal-oriented; and be able to work both independently and as part of a team.
Key Responsibilities:
- Building and Strengthening the Moral Minyan Program: The National Organizer will support the strengthening and development of new locally-based organizing units – called Moral Minyans; coach, mentor, and train volunteer leaders around various organizing and campaign skills; support leaders to set goals to move their work forward; support leaders to grow their leadership teams; support leaders to plan actions, educational events, rapid response events, lobby visits, partner meetings and more; incorporate Jewish values and content into organizing work; hold relationships with local Jewish and progressive organizations in geographies where Moral Minyans are operating.
- Building Educational Materials: Create and work on plans to distribute various toolkits, manuals, trainings (webinar and on the ground training), talking points and other materials as needed to support any leader organizing in Moral Minyans (both in their turf and potentially beyond).
- Creating strong absorption pipelines: Beyond supporting the development of moral minyan units and leaders in the field, the National Organizer will create stronger plans for creating pipelines for engagement with new potential members during surge periods; develop and implement online to offline engagement evergreen systems; develop/use ladders of engagement for new people and for all of our campaigns.
- Part of Bend the Arc Organizational Culture: The National Organizer will be an integral member of Bend the Arc’s field team, and will work closely with organizers to ensure field and campaign integration; build plans for recruitment and programmatic work for our national conference and other similar events; support information sharing across other departments; and contribute to other organization wide priorities
Required Skills and Qualifications:
- Commitment to the mission and vision of Bend the Arc and to organizing people as Jews in social movement work
- 3-4 years of experience in community, faith based, campus, legislative, and/or electoral organizing, with experience doing distributed organizing preferred
- Demonstrated commitment to racial equity and inclusion, commitment to anti-oppression practices and experience centering people of color in a multi-racial organizing context
- Ability to build and maintain strong one-to-one and institutional relationships with a diverse array of people, including a variety of age groups and affiliation levels, and with partners from diverse communities
- Ability to include Jewish content and inspiration in organizing work
- Ability to identify, recruit, develop, and mentor volunteer leaders to build their skills and commitment and inspire their best work and build effective teams
- Experience planning and leading trainings (webinar and on the ground)
- Understanding of federal, statewide and local politics and advocacy, understanding of how to identify power structures at play and how to influence them; Formal training in organizing strongly preferred
- Demonstrated success at keeping multiple projects organized; good short- and long-term planning skills; strong administrative and time-management skills; comfort working in a fast-paced campaign environment
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Understanding of how to take online community members into real life actions and make organizing and recruitment campaigns bigger in a consistent way
- Ability to travel and work some evenings and Sundays. Travel will be in and out-of-state as needed
- Competency in a range of applications. Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Google platforms (Gmail, Google Docs, Google Hangouts, etc.), as well as comfort learning new technology and systems. The candidate will use NationBuilder, NGP VAN, Get Thru, Office & Google Suites, Slack, Facebook and Twitter to support organizing work
