New York City Anti-Violence Project Seeks Manager of Policy and Research

PRIMARY FUNCTIONS

The Manager of Policy and Research will collaborate with and support the state and local organizing and advocacy team as well the Nation Coalition of Anti-Violence Programs (NCAVP) team to provide analysis and leadership on advocacy campaigns in New York as well as with NCAVP members around the country in a state and federal capacity. The Manager of Policy and Research will also oversee and coordinate data, research, and writing for AVP and NCAVP reports. Acts as spokesperson in meetings with policy makers and in coalitions, leads trainings and technical assistance with community members, NCAVP member programs, and other stakeholders. Regular travel required.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 Policy Advocacy:

 Research and track city, state, and federal policy opportunities; work with the Executive Director, the Director of COPA and NCAVP to determine policy priorities; and coordinate advocacy efforts to implement policy initiatives on issues related to LGBTQ and HIV-related violence.

  • Participate in meetings and phone calls with coalitions, organizations, and government representatives on federal, state, and city policies and work related to AVP’s and NCAVP’s missions
  • Lead AVP and NCAVP member programs to develop legislative action that promotes the missions by: developing position statements; reviewing and recommending endorsements of policies, and advocating for policies/legislation at state/federal levels.

 Data and Research:

  • Conceptualize and ensure the implementation of the overall research and national policy advocacy strategies and plans for AVP and NCAVP and work with other staff to ensure alignment and coordination with local and statewide efforts.
  • Identify areas of need for research on LGBTQ Violence and lead projects to develop and produce reports.
  • Oversee the collection, cleaning, coding, and analysis of data on LGBTQ and HIV-related violence for reports including NCAVP’s annual Hate Violence and Intimate Partner Violence reports.
  • Work with NCAVP and other partners to oversee the writing of research reports including NCAVP’s annual national reports on Hate Violence and Intimate Partner Violence.
  • Coordinate and provide technical assistance to member programs on data collection and research, including intake forms and database management.

 

Supervisory and Administrative:

  • Supervise, support and evaluate national policy and research staff, when hired, and social work and other interns
  • Oversee COPA department operations in collaboration with the Director of COPA and the Senior Manager of Organizing and Advocacy.
  • Work with the Director of COPA to produce government and foundation grant reports.

REQUIREMENTS

  • 3-5 years of social justice experience in a professional, volunteer, or activist capacity.
  • Familiarity with federal legislative and administrative policy processes and knowledge of New York City & State legislative processes.
  • Experience and familiarity with SPSS required.
  • Experience with social science metrics and statistical analysis, research, and report writing required.
  • Cultural competency in working with lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and HIV-affected communities, and commitment to ending violence within those communities.
  • Commitment to anti-oppression work, where oppression is understood as a system that gives some people, groups, or communities power over other people, groups or communities because of their identities and experiences.
  • Knowledge of broad range of LGBTQ hate violence, intimate partner violence, and sexual violence issues.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

 PREFERRED SKILLS

  • Community organizing experience in a legislative or other policy campaign.
  • Experience and knowledge
  • Coalition coordination and remote meeting facilitation skills.
  • Experience with city and state legislative and administrative policy processes outside of New York.
  • Knowledge of the Violence Against Women Act and the Family Violence Prevention and Services Act.
  • Speaking a language additional to English (especially Spanish) is desirable.

MSW with SIFI certification is desirable.
