The Canadian Association of University Teachers (CAUT) Seeks Collective Bargaining Officer (Ottawa, Canada)

The Canadian Association of University Teachers (CAUT), a progressive labour organization representing more than 70,000 academic and general staff at colleges and universities across Canada, is seeking to fill the position of Collective Bargaining Officer.

Duties

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Collective Bargaining Officer is responsible for:

  • providing expert tactical and strategic advice to CAUT member associations with respect to all aspects of collective bargaining
  • undertaking research and analysis of collective bargaining issues and trends
  • advising on the interpretation and enforcement of collective agreements
  • empowering academic staff associations to develop local capacity and expertise in collective bargaining
  • liaising with chief negotiators of CAUT member associations
  • writing and editing articles, advisories, and memoranda
  • assisting with the planning, preparation, and delivery of CAUT collective bargaining and other educational courses and workshops
  • undertaking other related duties as may be assigned

Skills and Experience

  • A minimum of 5 years’ experience as a senior or chief negotiator/bargaining officer with academic staff associations, trade unions or employee organizations
  • Substantial labour-side experience interpreting collective agreements and handling grievances, preferably in the post-secondary education sector
  • Expert knowledge of pensions and benefits, and significant experience with costing collective agreement proposals
  • Thorough knowledge of federal and provincial labour codes, employment standards, and other relevant legislation
  • Significant experience with and understanding of the grievance-arbitration process
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to make effective presentations to large groups
  • Superior written and verbal communications skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively as part of a team, and to manage complex assignments with minimal supervision
  • A graduate degree or equivalent experience
  • Understanding of and commitment to CAUT policies, practices and procedures
  • The ability to work in both official languages is an asset

This position has been classified as Category 5 in the Collective Agreement between CAUT and COPE Local 225.  The current hire rate for this category is $132,709.
