Made Uptown NYC Seeks Makerspace Coordinator – Farm Tech & Food Manufacturing

Made Uptown NYC has a mission to support existing maker manufacturers through advocacy, community organizing, and economic development and to build a vibrant livable Uptown for the next generation of young makers. We exist to support residents to make and grow Uptown.

ROLE DESCRIPTION:

Made Uptown NYC is seeking a Food & Farm Production Tech Coordinator to serve on the volunteer implementation team. He/She will build the infrastructure, support program development and develop program design, and pilot the Food & Farm Production Tech program.

The Food & Farm Production Tech program engages existing food manufactures as exemplary mentors to inspire the next generation of food manufactures. The core of the program activities is based on experimentation, demonstration, and education of how manufactured food products move from farm to table.

Your job is to plan, document, implement, and design procedures, processes, and protocols that will create a well managed learning and tinkering environment for makerspace members to learn, grow, and understand how food goes from farm to market to table.

RESPONSIBILITIES, includes but not limited to:

  • Attend steering committee meetings as needed
  • Develop a food tech and urban farm makerspace program and budget
  • Document, plan, design, and implement procedures, processes, and protocols that will create a well managed learning and tinkering environment for makerspace members to learn, grow, and understand how food goes from farm to market to table
  • Attending community based networking and outreach events to promote the project
  • Perform both administrative and farming tasks such as preparing farm beds, improving soil conditions, sowing, and harvesting
  • Supervise farm makerspace members, interns, and volunteers
  • Use popular education strategies to demonstrate food tech and urban farming skills
  • Collaborate with other staff members to advance project activities and other related organizational projects
  • Support grant writing, program reporting, participate in site visits with funders

PREFERRED SKILLS:

  • Consensus decision making
  • Organization, planning, and time management
  • Experience or demonstrated understanding of farm or gardening design, construction, management and workflow
  • Supervisory skills and management of youth and adults
  • Expertise or demonstrated understanding of the food industry, markets, and trends, food preparation/safety, and culinary arts

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience and leadership in urban farming or community garden
  • Experience working with youth and/or in an educational setting
  • Interest and excitement about the maker movement, tinkering, and experimentation
  • Experience running or operating a business
  • Startup business planning
  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent years of experienced
  • Valid driver’s license, experienced driver

DESIRED BACKGROUND:

  • Experience managing a makerspace
  • Uptown resident from The Bronx or Harlem (96th street and above); Yonkers and Mount Vernon residents are encouraged to apply as well
  • Bilingual in another language other than English: Swahili, Garifuna, French Creole, Bengali, Mandarin, Cantonese, Spanish, Japanese, French, Arabic,  German or other languages
