BRIC is the leading presenter of free cultural programming in Brooklyn, and one of the largest in New York City. We present and incubate work by artists and media-makers who reflect the diversity that surrounds us. Some of BRIC’s most acclaimed programs include the BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn! Festival in Prospect Park; path-breaking media initiatives, including the newly-renamed BRIC TV; and a renowned contemporary art exhibition series. BRIC also offers education and other vital programs at our main venue, BRIC Arts | Media House, and throughout Brooklyn. BRIC programs reach hundreds of thousands of people each year.
Purpose of Position:
BRIC is seeking a Community Engagement Associate to support and produce our core Community Engagement programs. This new position will participate in all aspects of implementing BRIC’s Community Engagement Plan, adopted in 2016, which aims to further BRIC’s commitment to be a neighborhood resource for residents and organizations in the immediate BRIC House area.
The position will provide daily administrative and coordination support related to producing all Community Engagement programs including the Community Arts Council based at Ingersoll Community Center, interpretive programming for performing and visual arts, and partner programs. The position will directly manage the implementation and development of specific initiatives including Stoop Share and the JazzFest Educational concerts.
Key Duties:
- Work with Associate Director of Community Engagement to plan, implement and evaluate core programs with neighborhood partners, schools, and residents.
- Act as on-site event manager for Community Engagement public programs; liaise with production staff and manage front of house staff; prepare post-show reports.
- Prepare and manage contracts, vendors, schedules and payments for Community Engagement programs, within determined budgets
- Communicate clearly with partners about deadlines, budgets, guidelines and requirements, while balancing and advocating for the unique needs of each program partner.
- Support Associate Director to work with marketing team to meet established deadlines for successful program promotion.
- Identify and attend neighborhood events, meetings, programs, and resource fairs as agreed upon with supervisor to further BRIC’s visibility and opportunities for neighborhood support and partnership. Contribute to the growth of BRIC’s public reputation and presence locally, particularly in support of our commitment to amplify community voices and further racial justice values.
- Communicate with BRIC’s neighborhood by contributing to the development of a bi-annual departmental e-newsletter and writing BRIC Blog posts that highlight the work of the Community Engagement initiatives and partners.
- Respectfully respond to inquiries and invitations from neighborhood partners, schools, artists and residents in a timely and generous manner.
Qualifications:
- Ability to work with a broad range of partners in a variety of communities; particularly with a strong understanding of racial justice and an ability to engage respectfully with individuals from historically under-represented communities (whether or not you come from one yourself).
- Production experience in a range of contexts, from cultural spaces to community and/or untraditional venue, especially: participatory arts-based programs; lectures; readings; screenings; concerts; educational projects.
- Proven experience with contracting, budgeting, production advance, event planning, and day-of event management.
- Demonstrated familiarity with: community organizing strategies; arts-based cultural activism; and participatory design and planning projects.
- Excellent time management and organizational skills and attention to detail, ability to take initiative and manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
- Excellent computer skills, particularly MS platforms, including Word, Outlook, PowerPoint and Excel.
- Extraordinary verbal and written communication and presentation skills.
- A strong sense of professionalism and responsibility, respectful attitude, team spirit, and willingness to learn in the field and on the job.
- Fluency and/or competency in a language other than English, especially those spoken in the BRIC House neighborhood (i.e. Spanish, Mandarin, Arabic) is a plus.
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience.
- 3-5 years of professional experience preferred.
Salary and Schedule
This is a full-time, salaried position with full benefits package. Some evenings and weekends are required. This position is grant-funded for 2 years, with potential for extension. Salary is approximately $43-46K, commensurate with experience.
