Cabrini Immigrant Services of NYC, Inc. (CIS-NYC) is a multi-service community and faith-based non-profit that provides a broad range of culturally and linguistically appropriate services to immigrants, refugees, asylees, and their families. CIS-NYC meets the unique needs of diverse immigrant populations through supportive services and concrete assistance which encourage economic independence and social empowerment, foster individual growth and development, and promote self-determination for immigrant families, children and youth.
Job Description
The Community Organizing Intern will work closely with the Community Organizing Coordinator to support the Justice for Immigrants Program. This program seeks to address challenges faced by the local immigrant community on both the micro and the macro level; providing necessary and empowering resources and information to individuals and their families, while also seeking to address the political and institutional dynamics that marginalize them. We educate, empower, and organize participants through monthly Know Your Rights workshops, leadership development activities, rallies, press conferences and other actions. The Intern will be responsible primarily for conducting outreach to and engaging with immigrants in the Lower East Side.
Job Responsibilities
The Community Organizing Intern’s main responsibilities will include, though not be limited to:
- Conducting community outreach and engagement within the Lower East Side neighborhood, with a focus on local businesses who hire immigrant workers, schools, and churches
- Developing relationships with local community members and engaging in one-on-one conversations with potential community leaders
- Coordinating and conducting at least three offsite Know Your Rights workshops in the community with the support of the Community Organizing Coordinator
- Identifying and evaluating local community needs and traits. Will develop a final report of local community needs to be used to guide CIS-NYC’s community organizing work over the next year.
- Assisting Community Organizing Coordinator with outreach for and coordination of onsite workshops as needed.
Job Requirements
- Interest and/or experience in working on progressive social justice issues and immigrant issues
- Fluent in Spanish and English
- Currently working toward a college degree, preferably in a related field (e.g.: Social work, sociology, political science, etc.)
- Ability to work well both independently and on a team
- Excellent communication skills (written, verbal) and comfortable with public speaking
- Flexibility in working occasional evenings and weekends
