Community Food Advocates Seeks Director of Policy Campaigns and Organizing

Community Food Advocates, founded in 2010, is an organization focused on fighting poverty and hunger in New York City. Our mission is grounded in the belief that access to healthy and nutritious food is a basic income and food equity issue and essential to the quality of life of all New Yorkers.
We believe that government has a fundamental responsibility to establish policies and programs that promote greater access to food for communities living in poverty. To that end we use advocacy, organizing, and coalition building grounded in solid policy and budget analysis to improve New Yorkers’ access to food. We spearhead the Lunch 4 Learning Campaign who recently won universal free school lunch for all 1.1 million NYC public school students. We are also a lead partner for the campaign to bring Good Food Purchasing policy to NYC. CFA is seeking a seasoned results-oriented Director of Policy Campaigns and Organizing who has in-depth knowledge of the City, State and Federal political and policy making process, strong policy and analytic skills, experience building, organizing and directing strategic coalition-based policy campaigns, significant experience supervising staff and working with diverse communities, and strong communication and interpersonal skills. The Director of Policy Campaigns and Organizing will report to the Executive Director.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
• Develop and lead coalition-based policy advocacy campaigns with positive outcomes.
• Identify, engage and manage partner relationships for the campaigns.
• Stay abreast of policies and political environment that impact campaign strategy.
• Develop policy briefing materials to support advocacy and organizing efforts.
• Supervise and meet with staff regularly to ensure work flow is aligned with campaign
goals.
• Work closely with Executive Director to develop strategy, plan activities/actions and
provide up-dates on campaigns and staff activities.
• Lead our youth leadership development work through our Youth Justice League
• Assist Executive Director in fundraising activities and generating grant reports as needed.
• Develop agenda and manage campaign partner meetings.
• Develop relationships with elected officials and other policy makers.
• Represent CFA in meeting with elected officials and others.
• Prepared partners for meetings with elected officials.
• Prepare testimony for hearings.
• Maintain expense reports as it relates to the campaigns.
• Assist Executive Director with related administrative activities as needed.
• Identify potential opportunities for new areas of work.

REQUIREMENTS
• Education – Bachelor’s degree
• 5-7 years of experience developing and leading strategic policy campaigns and policy
analysis experience.
• 3-5 years staff supervision.
• Strong knowledge of NYC’s political landscape.
• Strongly value collaborative and team approach.
• Experience with public speaking with various audiences.
• Experience building engaging relationships with coalition partners.
• Experience planning and facilitating effective coalition/organizing meetings.
• Experience meeting with and developing relationships with policy makers.
• Strong communications and writing skills.
• Ability to manage several projects at one time.
• Experience writing policy briefs.
• Self-directed
• Ability to work evening and weekends as necessary
