Women’s March Seeks Executive Director

On January 21, 2017, people of all backgrounds–women and men and gender nonconforming people, young and old, of diverse faiths, disabilities, immigrants and indigenous–came together, 5 million strong, on all seven continents of the world. We were answering a call to show up and be counted as those who believe in a world that is equitable, tolerant, just and safe for all, one in which the human rights and dignity of each person is protected and our planet is safe from destruction. Grounded in the nonviolent ideology of the Civil Rights movement, the Women’s March was the largest coordinated protest in U.S. history and one of the largest in world history and launched the Women’s March organization.

The mission of the Women’s March organization (WM) is to harness the political power of all women and their communities to create transformative social change. The WM began as a women-led movement providing intersectional education and activism on a diverse range of issues and ensuring accessible entry points for new grassroots activists & organizers to engage online and in their local communities. Women’s March is committed to dismantling systems of oppression through nonviolent resistance, direct lobbying, policy advocacy and building inclusive structures guided by self-determination, dignity and respect.

Women’s March is seeking an experienced professional for the position of Executive Director (ED) to lead the transition of the group’s work from a moment to a movement. In accordance with the Unity Principles of the Women’s March, the Executive Director will work with the Board of Directors to set the organization’s long and short term strategies. The ED will also have the exciting opportunity to create, drive and oversee the operational plan, design and oversee the organization’s functions and activities, including shaping and leading a team of staff and volunteers.

JOB PURPOSE

The Executive Director is responsible for leading and managing the organization and helping drive the strategic plan in partnership with the Board of Directors.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Leadership

  • Work directly with the Board of Directors (BOD or Board) to develop a vision and strategic plan to guide the organization; operationalize and implement the strategic plan set forth
  • Ensure that the Woman’s March organization operates in accordance with the movement-based principles under which it was founded
  • Foster effective teamwork between the staff, as well as engage the organization’s chapters, volunteers, and movement partners in a meaningful and effective way
  • Recruit, interview and select staff that embody the intersectional values of the organization and have the right skill sets to help further the organization’s mission
  • Sustain a high performance and supportive culture that includes performance management, coaching, professional development and mentoring
  • Promote active and broad participation by volunteers in all areas of the organization’s work
  • Establish a positive, inclusive, accessible, and safe work environment in accordance with the Women’s March Unity Principles and all appropriate legislation and regulation compliance

 

Operational planning and management

  • Develop an operational plan which incorporates goals and objectives that work towards the strategic direction of the organization
  • Oversee an efficient and effective day-to-day operation of the organization
  • Determine staffing requirements for organizational management and program delivery
  • Oversee the implementation of the human resources policies, procedures and practices
  • Set Board meeting calendar and agendas

 

Fundraising, Financial planning and management

  • Work with staff and the Board to prepare and monitor a comprehensive budget
  • Develop resources sufficient to ensure the financial health of the organization
  • Responsible for fiscal integrity, to include submission to the Board of a proposed annual budget and monthly financial statements, which accurately reflect the financial condition of the organization
  • Responsible (along with the BOD) for fundraising and developing other resources necessary to support the mission
  • Expand revenue-generating and fundraising activities to support existing program operations and expansion
  • Seek and apply for grant opportunities, and build relationships with foundations
  • Ensure that sound bookkeeping and accounting procedures are followed
  • Administer the funds of the organization according to the approved budget and monitor the monthly cash flow of the organization
  • Serve as liaison with legal counsel

 

Program planning and management

  • Oversee the design, implementation and evaluation of the Women’s March programs, initiatives, actions, and campaigns and ensure their accessibility
  • Ensure that the programs and actions contribute to the organization’s mission and reflect the values and priorities of the organization

 

Communications

  • Effectively communicate the position of the organization in verbal, written and presentation formats
  • In addition to the Board of Directors, act (as needed) as a spokesperson for the organization and represent the Woman’s March at events and in the press
  • Identify opportunities to expand and improve upon all aspects of communications – internally, externally and across all digital platforms

 

Community relations/advocacy

  • Foster and maintain relations of trust with stakeholders (Board, staff, volunteers, leaders of state chapters, sister marches, partner organizations, global, etc.)
  • Create systems and communication structures to support and amplify the work of state and global chapters
  • Ensure that the organization’s activities and opportunities are accessible to all for inclusive participation
  • Establish partnerships and join coalitions with other based organizations working towards the same objectives in the movement; create good working relationships and collaborative arrangements with partners working across the Resistance as well as politicians, and other organizations

 

EDUCATION

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent life experience preferred

 

THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR SHOULD DEMONSTRATE COMPETENCE IN THE FOLLOWING:

  • Organization and planning skills: determining strategies to move the organization forward, set goals, create and implement actions plans, and evaluate the process and results.
  • Human resources, financial and project management
  • Oral & written communications including public speaking

 

EXPERIENCE

  • 8+ years of relevant experience (has experience supervising a team of 5+ people)
  • Experience in opening or starting a division, department or organization
  • Background in social justice movements and campaigns
  • Experience developing and implementing issue-based campaigns and strategies
  • Experience leveraging technology/digital tools to support organizing and fundraising efforts
  • Experience leading or working in intersectional coalitions
  • Diversified fundraising experience (including experience with digital/e-mail based fundraising and grantwriting)

SALARY

  • Competitive salary commensurate with experience.
