New Yorkers for Parks Seeks Community Outreach Coordinator

About New Yorkers for Parks:

For over 100 years, New Yorkers for Parks (NY4P) has built, protected, and promoted parks in New York City. Today, NY4P is the citywide independent organization championing quality parks and open spaces for all New Yorkers in all neighborhoods. NY4P achieves this mission through an integrated approach of research, advocacy, and strategic partnerships.

General Description:

The Community Outreach Coordinator is responsible for fostering relationships with park volunteers, local advocates, and community groups in all five boroughs to advance technical assistance and advocacy goals for the organization. This includes working with the Director of Outreach & Programs to manage NY4P’s annual Daffodil Project; organizing events such as panels, community meetings, and rallies; representing NY4P at public meetings and events; and maintaining strong connections with the organization’s constituency through its online communications, social media, community meetings, and one-on-one contact.

It brings together volunteers and draws attention to the needs of neglected parks and open spaces citywide. The Community Outreach Coordinator: helps to plan and carry out all aspects of the Project:

– Manages a seasonal Daffodil Project intern, and coordinates volunteer involvement in the project.

– Assists NY4P’s program and development teams on related fundraising activities, including reporting on grant proposals, the annual Daffodil Breakfast spring benefit, and volunteer plantings and parks clean-ups with major corporate donors.

The Community Outreach Coordinator will foster and maintain relationships with park volunteers, local advocates, and community groups across New York City. Nurturing these relationships furthers NY4P’s work to provide technical assistance and resources around park research, advocacy, planning, and beautification at the local level and empowers communities to advocate for their parks and open spaces. Key work responsibilities:

– Represents NY4P at community events, public meetings, and on occasion with elected officials and their staff. Work includes presentations about the organization’s mission, parks agenda, and/or specific issues to members of civic, greening, recreational and other interested organizations throughout New York City. Representation also includes tabling at various park and garden conferences.

– Works to expand NY4P relationships with existing advocates and peer organizations and to develop new connections in areas of the city where fewer exist.

– Works with the Director of Outreach & Programs to facilitate the growth of borough-wide park advocate networks through targeted borough- and citywide meetings and webinars, and mobilizes our network of advocates during citywide advocacy campaigns.

– Assists in the execution of NY4P’s 2017 mayoral and city council election campaign for parks, gardens, and open spaces; helps create and circulate advocacy petitions on the annual parks budget and other park agenda matters; and supports peer greening organizations in their efforts to organize non-partisan election-year events and forums.

– Analyzes feedback and concerns gathered from community members and advocates to help inform NY4P policy positions.

– Works closely with the Research & Planning staff to coordinate outreach and follow-up around NY4P’s research projects through surveys of the organization’s constituencies and broad dissemination of publications via emails, the website, and face-to-face meetings.

– Provides technical support in response to inquiries and requests for assistance from park stewardship groups as needed.

Other Responsibilities include:

– Developing timely content for organizational social media outlets and monthly e-blasts.

– Participating in organizational activities including staff meetings, strategic planning, fundraising and other administrative events.
