National Latina Institute for Reproductive Health Seeks Field Coordinator (NYC)

NLIRH seeks a New York Latina Advocacy Network (NY LAN) Field Coordinator. We are looking for a committed individual who is passionate about organizing to raise the voices of Latinas in New York for policy change at all levels of government on issues that impact their healthcare, and other social justice issues, through grassroots advocacy. The NY LAN Field Coordinator will build the base of activists willing to take action on issues. The Coordinator will develop community leadership, build relationships with key local, state and national stakeholders, partners, and elected officials, advance civic engagement strategies, and assist in campaign development and implementation. The position will work to expand the grassroots movement for Reproductive Justice in the New York City area, organizing at the intersection of immigrant justice, economic justice and reproductive justice. Candidates must have experience in community/political organizing, and coalition building, and must hold a commitment to reproductive health and rights and/or social justice issues.

This position will directly report to the Associate Director of Community Mobilization.

POSITION LOCATION: The New York LAN Coordinator will operate predominantly in the Bronx borough of New York City.

Responsibilities include:

  • Build a cadre of Latina activists to advance and support the NLIRH agenda through organizing and outreach to community members and partner organizations.
  • Manage day-to-day operations of the NY LAN.
  • Cultivate and strengthen relationships with elected officials, community partners, and organizational allies to advance NLIRH’s reproductive justice goals.
  • Represent the interests of NLIRH, coordinate efforts with partner organizations and at coalition tables, and oversee the strategic engagement of those relationships in order to build our efforts and overall impact.
  • Develop and implement reproductive justice campaigns for the NY LAN in collaboration with the Community Mobilization team.
  • Activate base to rapidly respond to urgent legislative and political issues.
  • Deliver trainings as part of overall leadership development plan, with support from education unit.
  • Lead civic and voter engagement efforts in the region, including:
  1. Activist management to conduct engagement activities including running a canvass and/or phone bank, and elected official outreach;
  2. Build and track outreach activities;
  3. Implementation of agreed upon outreach and targeting plans.
  • Track and report progress on programmatic goals, as well as track and report programmatic expenses in a timely manner.
  • Work closely with the Associate Director of Community Mobilization and the Community Mobilization team on other Community Mobilization efforts, including our National Advocacy Summit in Washington, D.C. and our annual National Latina Week of Action for Reproductive Justice.
  • Work collaboratively with the Government Relations and Public Affairs teams for state and local policy analysis support and guidance on all media efforts.
  • Serve as an NLIRH spokesperson for media and communications opportunities as determined.
  • Travel required.

Main Qualifications:

  • Prior community organizing or political campaign experience is required.
  • Have a working understanding of the structure of the state; knowledge of the New York City landscape, with particular emphasis on the Bronx, is required.
  • Knowledge and commitment to reproductive health and rights and/or social justice issues.
  • Preference given to candidates with relationships with key policymakers, civic engagement and reproductive health and rights stakeholders in the region, in particular to those with coalition building experience.
  • Fluency in written and spoken Spanish is required.
  • Familiarity with modern technology; understand and utilize social media; and be metrics driven.
  • Strong communication skills, including comfort with public speaking.
  • Ability to multi-task with attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently, think critically and creatively, and take initiative.
  • Ability to work well with a team and take direction and feedback.
  • Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office, database management/web/online tools, and social media/new media technologies.
