The New York Immigration Coalition Seeks Director, Immigration Advocacy

About the Organization

The New York Immigration Coalition (NYIC) is an umbrella policy and advocacy organization for nearly 200 groups in New York State. We envision a New York state that is stronger because all people are welcome, treated fairly, and given the chance to pursue their dreams. Our mission is to unite immigrants, members, & allies so all New Yorkers can thrive. We represent the collective interests of New York’s diverse immigrant communities and organizations and devise solutions to advance them; advocate for laws, policies, and programs that lead to justice and opportunity for all immigrant groups; and build the power of immigrants and the organizations that serve them to ensure their sustainability, to improve people’s lives, and to strengthen our state. Position Overview

Leads the NYIC’s immigration policy agenda on the federal, state and local levels, including monitoring developments and advocating changes in policy, such as for efforts to provide for a path to legalization, deportation and enforcement, and other critical immigrant rights issues.

Key Responsibilities

Visioning and Planning

  • Works with NYIC senior leadership to identify goals and priorities, and define strategies and timelines for immigration policy advocacy
  • Policy and Political Analysis and Government Relations
  • Keeps up with overall developments and trends in immigration policy and analyzes the political context to identify needs for rapid response and opportunities to move reform initiatives forward
  • Leads and oversees legislative or administrative advocacy, including conducting policy briefings, testifying and lobbying
  • Represents the organization to government officials and policymakers

Campaign Management

  • Develops, sets strategy for, and implements immigration-related advocacy campaigns
  • Develops and manages relationships with strategic allies involved in campaigns
  • Ensures immigration reform working group members’ active leadership and other community groups’ participation in campaigns
  • Leads efforts to stand up “rapid response” efforts when necessary

Coalition Work

  • Leads efforts to build and maintain a strong, multi-ethnic and geographically diverse group of member organizations and allies to do effective advocacy and organizing around campaigns
  • Identifies opportunities to bring new allies from diverse sectors into Coalition’s work and forms and manages strategic alliances. Strengthens participation from current groups
  • Directs efforts to provide technical assistance to member groups

Communications and Outreach

  • Develops advocacy and community education materials
  • Works with the communications team to do media outreach, including organizing press events, drafting media alerts and releases, developing talking points etc., social media, etc.
  • Serves as spokesperson for NYIC and its campaigns

Program Fundraising

  • Leads efforts in coordination with the development team to pursue and develop new funding prospects
  • Develops and maintains relationships with potential funders
  • Supports development efforts by preparing proposals and reports as needed, and supporting organizational fundraising campaigns such as annual gala

Management and Supervision

  • Supervises program staff and activities
  • Work with senior leadership to oversee program budget

Qualities Sought:

  • At least 5-7 years of relevant professional experience, including leadership of a team and ability to successfully supervise numerous team members to achieve key objectives
  • Detailed knowledge of immigration policy and issues facing diverse immigrant communities throughout New York
  • Understanding of coalition-building and grass-tops organizing
  • Proven ability to lead fundraising and communications efforts
  • Ability to operate in a fast-paced environment and juggle multiple tasks
