Reports To: Director of Sierra Club’s Labor and Economic Justice Program

Context: Plans, organizes and coordinates the activities of staff and volunteers in carrying out all aspects of Labor and Economic Justice Program related to the Beyond Dirty Fuels Campaign’s work on labor, economic justice and clean infrastructure. The Labor and Economic Justice Program addresses a wide range of issues aimed at ensuring that the transition from fossil fuels delivers on the potential for the clean energy economy to create millions of good, family supporting jobs.

Scope: The Senior Campaign Representative for Clean Infrastructure  works with Sierra Club’s Beyond Dirty Fuels Campaign national and regional staff, in coordination with Communications, Organizing, Digital, as well as chapter staff and volunteers, to design both national and localized organizing and campaign strategies to constructively engage the labor and economic justice communities to help ensure that the transition to a clean energy economy and phase out of oil and gas creates sustainable union jobs and strengthens local economies and communities.  This position will have a special emphasis on developing strong labor partnerships to foster support for water and other clean infrastructure, with a priority on bringing the benefits of clean infrastructure to low-income and communities of color.  The rep. will also work with the Beyond Dirty Fuels campaign to proactively prevent and address conflicts with labor partners.  Works with appropriate staff to integrate the goals and objectives of the Sierra Club’s Labor and Economic Justice Program and Beyond Dirty Fuels Campaign, and is a member of the Club’s Environmental and Economic Justice core national team.

Job Activities:

1. Develops and conducts organizing and campaign strategies and initiatives in coordination with the Beyond Dirty Fuels Campaign and the Labor and Economic Justice Program. Works with national staff and volunteers, as well as regional and chapter staff and volunteers to develop and carry out the organizing/campaign plans, using the Sierra Club organizing model.
2. Develops relationships with national and local allies and stakeholders within the labor community, and seeks to advance these relationships along a continuum towards coordinated joint action, particularly around building clean water infrastructure or clean energy infrastructure projects.
3. Develops educational and campaign/program issues information. This may include the writing, editing and distribution of webinars, fact sheets, newsletters, and educational materials.  It may also include the writing, editing and reviewing of articles for conservation-related publications.
4. Coordinates all activities with Beyond Dirty Fuels Campaign Director and the Labor and Economic Justice Program Director, ensuring collaboration, consistent messaging, and alignment of strategy with Beyond Dirty Fuels Campaign and Labor Program goals.
5. Supports and provides professional expertise to staff and volunteers.  Works to develop and ensure that volunteers assume meaningful roles in the program/ campaign. Provides conservation and labor training to volunteers.
6. Represents the Sierra Club to the general public, media or to outside officials. Conducts media outreach activities related to the campaign/program, including developing media outreach plans, serving as Sierra Club spokesperson to media outlets, and promotes volunteer media exposure.
7. Develops relationships with elected public officials and their staffs.  Develops and conducts lobby campaigns associated with the Labor and Economic Justice Program and the Beyond Dirty Fuels Campaign.
8. Performs miscellaneous duties as directed.

Knowledge & Skills:

• B.A./B.S. degree in Political Science, Labor Studies, Environmental Studies or a closely related field, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Minimum 4 years’ experience as a Washington D.C. associate representative, or in a comparable position in another organization which includes experience planning and conducting a national level campaign, including strategy, field organizing, lobbying, media, and work with senior level political leaders.
• Excellent knowledge and background in US labor, racial justice, and social justice movements, including issue specific areas such as workforce development, labor rights, unions, collective bargaining rights, organizing, and economic development.
• Experience coordinating work in a coalition setting, with demonstrated ability to navigate between multiple stakeholders.
• Valid driver’s license, satisfactory driving record, and proof of auto insurance required.
• Excellent demonstrated written and oral communication skills.  Demonstrated public speaking and media presentation ability.
• Prior experience and demonstrated ability and effectiveness working with volunteers.

This position is represented by a collective bargaining unit and is subject to the terms and conditions of the contract between Sierra Club and John Muir Local.
