The Red Umbrella Project (RedUP) is a small peer-led organization based in Brooklyn, New York, which amplifies the voices of people in the sex trades to take greater control of their lives and livelihoods through advocacy, community organizing, and storytelling.
Summary of Position
RedUP’s Program Director is a part time (20 hours per week), salaried, NYC-based position with a flexible schedule, reporting directly to the Board of Directors. The Program Director is responsible for the organization’s consistent achievement of its mission and goals, and conducts oversight for the day-to-day operations of the organization, including developing and maintaining community networking activities and strategic partnerships, evaluating and ensuring the operation and quality of RedUP’s programs, and supervising staff. The Director will be based in the Red Umbrella Project office in downtown Brooklyn, but is also expected to travel within the boroughs of NYC, and occasionally beyond for meetings and other work. Evening and weekend hours may sometimes be required. We prioritize hiring someone with experience in the sex trades, and encourage LGBTQ people, women (especially trans women), and people of color to apply.
Job responsibilities:
Organizational and Program Development
- Take leadership in developing programs and advocacy strategies, driven by members, that support the mission of the organization and serve people in the sex trades.
- Work with the Board and staff in streamlining the provision of programs and services, that operates in accordance with funding guidelines, evaluation and quality assurance protocols, and accounting practices.
- Coordinate strategic planning activities, led by the Board of Directors and staff, with the involvement of members.
- Maintain a working knowledge of significant developments and trends in the field.
- Maintain official records and documents and ensure compliance with federal, state and local regulations.
Staff Supervision and Support
- Oversee the recruitment, employment, and release of all personnel, including paid staff, member leaders, and volunteers.
- Ensure that job descriptions are developed, that consistent supervision is conducted, that performance evaluations are held, and that sound human resource practices are in place.
- Encourage staff and volunteer development and education, and assist program staff in relating their specialized work to the total program of the organization.
- Maintain a culture which attracts, keeps, and motivates a diverse staff of top quality people.
Community Relations
- Ensure that the board is kept fully informed on the condition of the organization and all important factors influencing it.
- Publicize the activities of the organization, its programs and goals through strategic communications included but not limited to social media, reports and materials published by the organization, essays and articles, and other media engagement
- Establish sound working relationships and cooperative arrangements with community groups and organizations, funders, press, and people involved in the sex trades.
- Represent the programs and point of view of the organization to funders, media, agencies, organizations, and the general public.
Skills and Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in Social Work, Public Health, or other related fields, or equivalent work experience
- Experience coordinating programs and service delivery, and supervising staff
- Experience working with people of different ethnic backgrounds, LGBTQ individuals and communities, people who use drugs, and people living with HIV/AIDS
- Willingness and proven ability to work cooperatively with other colleagues and community members
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Organized and able to handle a multi task environment
- Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, internet and other computer skills are desirable
Compensation
Annual salary for this position is $30,000 (20 hours per week). Benefits include accrued vacation and sick time, 8 paid holidays off, one paid week off at the end of the year, and professional development opportunities.
