Mason Tenders’ District Council of Greater New York and Long Island Seeks Laborers Health and Safety Fund Director

The Mason Tenders’ District Council of Greater New York and Long Island has emerged as one of the most progressive and aggressive labor organizations in the nation. The nearly 15,000 members of the Mason Tenders District Council (MTDC) include construction workers, asbestos and hazardous materials handlers and recycling and waste handlers.

The MTDC is seeking candidates to fill the position of Laborers Health and Safety Fund Director.

The ideal candidate will possess the following qualities:

  • Strong research, writing and communication skills with a commitment to and interest in worker safety and health issues.
  • A degree and/or equivalent work experience in the fields of public health, safety and health, construction safety or other related disciplines;
  • Work experience conducting research and policy analysis on safety and health issues.
  • Minimum of 3 to 5 years of training and safety experience, NYCOSH and /or OSHA experience preferred
  • Previous work with allies such as unions, community organizations, safety and health coalitions or other worker safety focused organizations.
  • A demonstrated ability to communicate to a variety of audiences
  • Excellent writing and analytical skills.
  • Working knowledge of internet research
  • Self starter and well organized.
  • Knowledge of Federal, state and local health & safety and environmental regulations (OSHA, Cal/OSHA, EPA, etc.)

The Safety Director will be responsible for, but not limited to, the following job functions:

  • Designing and conducting safety policy research, in collaboration with partners, including:
  • Researching and analyzing national and local legislative and regulatory policy initiatives related to worker safety and health
  • Researching industry safety and health practices
  • Analyzing new safety and health research
  • Summarizing relevant government and academic research
  • Play a key role in carrying out the mission of LIUNA to provide education about occupational safety and health to union members.
  • Work with LIUNA Local Unions and affiliated organizations to develop safety and health training programs and campaigns.
  • Conduct safety and health training sessions
  • Contribute to and write reports, public testimony, blogs and public education materials for safety campaigns and initiatives.
  • Represent the MTDC in various public arenas, including coalition meetings, administrative or legislative briefings and with the media.
  • Maintain and strengthen the MTDC capacity through regular review of relevant information, emerging trends, resources, tools, technical and technological developments related to workplace safety and health.
  • Providing technical, research and strategic assistance to grass roots allies.
  • Monitors workplace activities to ensure that workers comply with company policies and government safety regulations.
  • Provide instructional materials
  • Protect members engaged in the environmental trades
  • Help signatory contractors meet, and often surpass, government safety and health standards
  • Heightens employee and employer awareness of various diseases and health risks that workers face
  • Supports major health and safety research and prevention programs
  • Create a variety of communication tools distributed to construction sites to remind workers of the importance of personal protective equipment and other safety precautions
