NYC DOE Seeks Family and Community Outreach Associate

Position Summary: Family and Community Outreach Associates will work with the Field/Support Managers and Outreach Specialists to support schools with the development and implementation of effective family and community outreach and engagement. In particular, Community Associates will work with Parent Coordinators and other family engagement staff to teach and model effective direct outreach strategies such as one-on-one conversations, recruiting families for school events at pick-up and drop-off, tabling at school events and door-knocking in the neighborhood. Community Associates will also work directly with parents, families, and caregiver leaders to make them aware of training and leadership development opportunities, and help school staff and Family and Community Outreach Team move families up a “Ladder of Engagement.” Outreach Associates will schedule site visits and coordinate all their work in schools closely with Outreach Specialists assigned to the school.

Outreach Associates will be assigned to work with one or more Outreach Specialists who are each assigned to work with a geographic cluster of schools. Outreach Associates will be assigned to schools needing targeted outreach supports and can expect to also provide intensive support to 15-20 schools, in addition to supporting the broader objectives and work of the Family and Community Outreach Team. Outreach Associates may also assist schools in organizing small- and large-scale school events, Community School meetings and forums to foster broad family and community participation in Community School planning and work at the school.

Outreach Associates may also provide support for a broader set and/or cluster of schools. This will include supporting school-, district- or central-level parent and caregiver meetings and/or trainings organized and run by the Family and Community Outreach team. Outreach Associates may be assigned to schools that are not Community Schools or to a mix of Community Schools and non-Community Schools. Performs related work.

Reports to: Field/Support Managers

Direct Reports: N/A

Key Relationships: Field/Support Managers, Outreach Specialists, Parent Coordinators, school family engagement staff, parent and caregiver leaders, PA/PTA leadership, Community School team members, SLT members, and community leaders.

Responsibilities

  • In collaboration with Outreach Specialists, Associates will support schools to implement effective direct outreach methods including: maintaining and building effective contact lists, conducting parent-to-parent and staff phone-banking, distributing flyers before and after school and at high-traffic areas, door-knocking to Community School families, etc.
  • Identify potential parent and caregiver leaders for one-on-one relational conversations and other recruitment efforts to build and strengthen family engagement in the Community School planning process and in the school.
  • Advise and recruit parents and caregivers for ongoing training and leadership development opportunities.
  • Support Family and Community Outreach Team to hold school- and district-level family information sessions and trainings.
  • Coordinate and participate in comprehensive phone banking centrally and on-site in schools.
  • Train school staff and parent leaders in leading and implementing effective comprehensive phone bank efforts as well as other outreach methods.
  • Support data collection and data entry in the VAN database.
  • Support the development of a “Ladder of Engagement” at the school to develop the leadership skills of families.

Qualification Requirements:

Minimum

  1. High school graduation or equivalent and three years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to duties described above; or
  2. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to “1” above.

Preferred

  • Interest in family and/or community organizing, working with school communities, and Community Schools.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Spanish, Chinese, Russian, Arabic, Bengali/Urdu, Haitian Creole, French, or Korean.
  • Organized and detail-oriented with strong analytical skills, the ability to multitask, and drive process improvement.
  • Experience in the New York City public school system.
  • Strong project management and implementation experience.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Internal candidates preferred.

Salary: $34,555+
