The community organizer helps build neighborhood-wide campaigns around affordable housing, land use, development and other local issues in Hell’s Kitchen and adjacent Manhattan neighborhoods. The community organizer works closely with closely neighborhood leaders, tenant associations, local government staff and housing advocates and HCC staff, particularly its tenant organizers, to win local and citywide affordable housing campaigns. Most campaign work is done through the West Side Neighborhood Alliance, (WSNA), a 400-plus grassroots organization of community members. In addition the community organizer provides organizing support to WSNA, to increase its membership, enhance its visibility and role in shaping the future of the neighborhood, provide trainings and strengthen WSNA through recruitment and leadership development. Recruitment is done through a combination of social media tools, including a regular email blast, twitter, facebook,and Flickr page, database management and community outreach. As time permits, the community organizer will work to organize tenant building-wide.
Work hours are flexible but often require evening meetings and some weekends. Ability to speak Spanish, high-level computer skills and minimum two years experience preferred. Salary commensurate with experience; starting salary for two years of direct experience is $44,149; benefits include medical and dental coverage among others.
