Other Worlds is an education and movement support collaborative. Our mission is to compile and bring to light alternatives flourishing throughout the world – ones opening spaces for economic, political, social, and environmental justice, and meaningful democracy – in order to inspire and incite others. We also directly support the movements that are propelling the alternatives. Our current programs focus on promoting: land rights in Haiti and Honduras; food sovereignty; and information on just economic, political, environmental, and gender alternatives.
The job:
The full-time job of directing this small and unique 501(c)(3) collaborative is a rare opportunity for someone who has a wide range of talents and abilities; who enjoys a variety of daily responsibilities; and who has passion and skill for strengthening and campaigning with social movements. The Coordinator ensures that Other Worlds advances its political mission with integrity and effectiveness, and that its team, operations, and finances are healthy. The Coordinator guides the staff in advancing the vision and strategy; leads fundraising; and provides political leadership in our campaigns, education, and collaborations.
Areas of Work:
Ensuring the advance of the mission of Other Worlds;
Ensuring the steady progress, and political integrity, of the program of Other Worlds;
Building and maintaining relationships with movements, activists, and colleague organizations;
Ensuring that Other Worlds maintains solid principles, healthy relationships, and respect within the organization, within the movement, and among our allies;
Hiring and managing staff, and helping ensure their effectiveness;
Guiding the organizational culture of Other Worlds;
Guiding the board toward effective contributions;
Taking the lead on fundraising to ensure financial stability;
Overseeing sound administrative systems; and
Ensuring solid fiscal management.
Requirements:
Deep and demonstrable commitment to social and economic justice;
At least three years of experience in non-profit management;
Proven ability in non-profit fundraising;
Strong background with social movements and the political and economic issues they address;
Very strong writing, communication, and networking skills; and
Ability to take independent initiative while working closely with a team.
Knowledge of Spanish, Haitian Creole, and/or French strongly desired.
Location:
Oakland, CA, but open to negotiation. Some travel will be required.
Start time:
Immediate.
Time commitment:
Minimum of three years.
Salary:
$48,000/year.
