Joining New York Restoration Project’s AmeriCorps team is a way to put your idealism into action and to positively impact communities throughout NYC! We are seeking to fill an AmeriCorps service position to start in March 2016 for a 6-month term of service.
Mission
NYRP carries out founder Bette Midler’s dream of a cleaner, more beautiful New York City by restoring, developing, and revitalizing underserved parks, community gardens, and open space in all five boroughs. We invest in the communities we serve by providing ongoing maintenance and enriching educational and public programming because we believe that every individual has the right to a beautiful neighborhood and the responsibility for contributing to its care.
Summary of Position
The Public Programs Assistant will work with the Public Programming team to implement over 150 free, outdoor programs focused in arts and healthy living. This position offers the opportunity to strengthen communities while adding an array of experience to your resume. This position will work closely with the Public Events Manager and Volunteer Programs Manager, and will report to the Director of Special Events & Programming.
Job Description
Responsibilities will include:
- Supporting the coordination and execution of public events including but not limited to: arts, culture & wellness events, volunteer days, tree giveaways, and a variety of community garden programming
- Coordinating and implementing localized, grassroots outreach efforts for public programs
- Building relationships with local organizations, vendors, and community members
- Assisting with program evaluation through data collection and data management
- Collecting feedback and reporting to the team in order to strengthen future events
- Willingness to work a flexible schedule and to travel throughout NYC, including evenings and weekends.
Qualifications
- Experience in event planning
- Ability to clearly communicate, both verbally and written, internally and externally (Spanish speaker preferred, though not required)
- A self-starter who is able to work independently and meet deadlines
- Experience with Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel) + Adobe Creative Suite and/or Publisher
- Ability to multi-task and problem solve with attention to details
- Enthusiasm for the arts, community engagement, horticulture, and a willingness to learn
- Experience and comfort working with community members
- Ability to lift up to 30 lbs (carrying equipment is a common part of the role)
- Valid Driver’s License preferred, but not required
