The Professional Staff Congress, AFT 2334, is a progressive, activist union representing 25,000 faculty and staff at The City University of New York. The PSC is seeking to hire an organized individual to provide professional assistance to the union’s legislative and communications staff in a team-driven environment. This is a professional, unionized position.
Responsibilities: Under supervision, with some latitude for independent decision-making, carries out work in two professional areas of activity:
1. Legislative Responsibilities:
- Provide staff support for the union’s Legislative Committee (including communications, organizing and scheduling lobbying visits; tracking members’ meetings with legislators, etc.);
- Assist in secondary research and data collection necessary to prepare briefing memos, fact sheets and other materials supporting the union’s legislative lobbying program;
- Participate in development of the union’s political strategy as part of the legislative team;
- Attend public hearings, meetings, press conferences and other events related to the union’s political action operations as needed and write brief summary reports;
- Maintain and update the database of legislators;
- Event planning including scheduling venue, notices, outreach, etc. (i.e., NYSUT Committee of 100, CUNY at the Council).
2. PSC Website and Communications Responsibilities:
- Assist in updating and maintaining the union’s website and Facebook pages; help design homepage features and monitor the website to make sure content is up-to-date;
- Assist in the development of a consistent graphic identity for union publications;
- Maintain and update photographic and video archives;
- Assist with media outreach, including social media, and public relations work.
Qualifications:
- Strong organizational skills, detail-oriented;
- Excellent verbal and interpersonal skills;
- Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain complex work plans and meeting schedules involving multiple projects, departments and participants;
- Demonstrated experience with a with a range of computer software, including graphics and photographic-management software;
- Strong writing skills;
- Legislative, political and organizing experience a plus;
- Demonstrated commitment to progressive trade unionism and social justice.
Education and Experience Requirements:
- 4-year college degree
- At least five years related experience
- 3 full-time employment references
Compensation: $60,000+, depending on experience
